Beets

Beta vulgaris - In 2010 when we first moved to Open Oak Farm, we found ourselves surrounded by GMO sugar beet seed crops. So we were forced to figure out a new way of growing out our beet and chard seed that is isolated from GMO pollen. We have avoided contamination so far by time isolating in our greenhouse and hope to have more properly isolated beet and chard seed next season. There was a court ordered injunction against GMO sugar beet seed production, and it was ignored. We will see if coexistence and regulation for the public good is even possible.
