Escarole, Diva
Broad-leafed Batavian type endive. Large, loose green leaf heads are a delicious addition to salad and are also good steamed and are mild even in summer heat. Diva’s broad leaves are sugary sweet with a tiny hint of bitterness; imagine juicy sweet walnuts. Holds quality through our harshest winters. We sourced our original seed of this European standby variety from German biodynamic seed company, Bingenheimer Saatgut.
We highly recomend endive for winter gardening as it tolerates winter weather very well and is one of the slowest to bolt overwintered vegetables in the spring. Even if the plants start to look a little worn out mid-winter, they usually seem to start looking great in early spring. Sow in july and harvest October through December (at least).
