It was the first time we had looked at them all side by side by side by side (x 22!)…. And Wow! We learned so much! A single pant of our Adaptive Early Thai pepper yielded 331 fruit (total weight, 1.89 lbs)! The Gabi Hot Wax seemed to have ripened ALL of its fruit by 9/19, but when we went back a month later, 12 more fruit had set! Across all types, the average yield per plant was 1.9 lbs, but Aji Crystal blew the others out of the water with 5.69 lbs from one plant! - [The Adaptive Seeds Guide to Growing Garlic](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/the-adaptive-seeds-guide-to-growing-garlic/): At Adaptive Seeds garlic is one of our favorite crops! Large plants produce giant bulbs and cloves. Easily out-yielded every other garlic in our field in 2026, in spite of being planted six weeks later! Bulbs can reach over 3" diameter and weigh up to 4oz when grown under ideal conditions. Tight clove wrappers enable this variety to store longer into the winter compared with many other hardneck types. Russian Giant originally came from Kungur, Russia, in the Ural Mountains. - [Dry Farming Zine](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/books/dry-farming-zine/): By Dry Farming Institute, Culinary Breeding Network, and Oregon State University. 2024. 42 pages. - [Adaptive Seeds Patch](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/adaptive-seeds-patch/): Adorn your gear with an Adaptive Seeds knuckle tattoo patch! Fists have knuck tats that say “ADAPT-TIVE” positioned above larger stencil-style text that reads “SEEDS.” - [Adaptive Seeds Round Logo Shirt](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/adaptive-seeds-round-logo-shirt/): Show the world you are Bringing Biodiversity Back with this t-shirt featuring our classic Bringing Biodiversity Back sticker design. Fists rock knuck tats that say “ADAP-TIVE” and are pictured over larger stencil-style text that reads “SEEDS.” - [Adaptive Seeds Baseball Hat](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/adaptive-seeds-baseball-hat/): Cover your dome with an Adaptive Seeds hat! Hats have a black patch with white design featuring fists holding a shovel and a pitchfork (or is it a spoon and a fork?). Fists rock knuck tats that say “ADAP-TIVE” and are pictured over larger stencil-style text that reads “SEEDS.” - [Adaptive Seeds Bringing Biodiversity Back Shirt](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/adaptive-seeds-bringing-biodiversity-back-shirt/): Wear your love for Adaptive Seeds with an Adaptive Seeds Logo shirt! This t-shirt features a vertical black logo design on the front. We’ve got your back, too: Bringing Biodiversity Back! is emblazoned across the back. Sandy soil color is perfect for getting dirty. - [Cabbage, Dowinda (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/cabbage/cabbage-dowinda-organic/): A late season green storage cabbage well-suited for fall production. Tender and sweet, great in fresh eating applications like coleslaw; also makes exceptional sauerkraut. Impressive lack of farty-smell when cooked! Heads are slightly oblong in shape. Dowinda Cabbage is best planted out in mid-July for harvest in November, when cool weather enhances both flavor and texture. We first met Dowinda when glancing into winter storage cabbage bins at Dottenfelderhof Agricultural Community in Germany in 2006. Mountainous piles of this delicious cabbage were being produced there as part of the process of further selecting Dowinda for its incredible qualities. Bred by Dietrich Bauer and first released in 2004, Downdia is a special selection from Dottenfelder Dauer, a classic cabbage produced by German Biodynamic growers since the 1970’s. We are proud to source our seed from our friends at Uprising Seeds and we thank them for maintaining and producing this valuable variety in the US. - [Anise (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/anise-organic/): Many people are familiar with Anise via treats such as the Italian biscuit biscotti, New Mexico's state cookie biscochito, or specialty liquors such as ouzo or Jägermeister. The licorice-like smell of the seeds freshens the air (and breath) and helps stimulate digestion; it is also used in teas for digestive and respiratory support. The first time we grew Anise we were surprised by the fact that its growth habit more closely resembles dill than its other close relative, fennel. Small, wispy plants grow only a couple of feet tall and are minimally branching; white-flowered umbels are more dainty than most garden plants in the Apiaciae family. Easy to grow and process - with a dense planting, one can produce enough Anise seed for annual kitchen and medicinal use in a relatively small area.  - [Milkweed, Showy (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/milkweed-showy-organic/): Showy Milkweed is native to all Western states and is the most common species of milkweed native to Oregon. Plants grow to 4’-5’ tall when irrigated, with large, pale green, lobe-shaped leaves. Milkweed is known to thrive along roadside ditches and other neglected areas, where it tends to grow much shorter. The flowers are out of this world and are also visited by hummingbirds and other pollinators looking for nectar. Plants spread slowly via rhizomes. It may take several years for plants to flower from seed. The milky sap produced when cutting milkweed is toxic to animals if consumed in large quantities, and is the source of the monarch butterfly’s boldly advertised inedibility. - [Sesame, Northern Sesame Supergroup (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/sesame-northern-sesame-supergroup-organic/): Sesame is a heat loving plant that can be difficult to grow in areas with cool growing seasons, such as our location in Oregon. We are thrilled that the Northern Sesame Supergroup may be another step towards selecting a more successful sesame for our climate!  After several failed attempts wherein plants barely even started to flower – let alone set seed – our friends at the Dry Farming Institute let us in on a secret: The key to successful sesame crop in Oregon is (drumroll) Not watering it! Well, that, and starting with Northern-adapted germplasm. We sowed in flats in the greenhouse, then watered transplants for a couple of weeks until they were established. Then we cut the water. It was hard! They looked thirsty! But, even with droopy leaves, tubular flowers (reminiscent of tobacco or foxglove flowers) eventually formed. And then seedpods! Success!  - [Patience Dock (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/greens/patience-dock-organic/): A semi-wild perennial with a long culinary history in Central and Eastern Europe that is right at home with Transylvanian Sorrel, Buck’s Horn Plantain, and Salad Burnet. Patience Dock can be used as a salad green while young, although best used as a sauté green (cooked like spinach) when slightly more mature. Leaves have a mild, slightly lemony flavor and have a high mineral content, but also contain oxalic acid and are best not consumed in extreme quantities. Greens sprout early in the spring to fill in the hungry gap before the annual garden gets going and can be harvested through early June. Plants form an unassuming basal rosette and grow to about 12” across with strap-shaped leaves that grow to 1-2’ long. This is the kind of plant to stash in the back of the garden, where it will pretty much take care of itself until you need it - but be sure to cut the flower stalk before the seed is mature if you don’t want it to spread. Drought tolerant but may go dormant in the summer. Check out this great video for more!  - [Sweet William, Barcelona Red (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sweet-william-barcelona-red-organic/): Deep, velvety red, 1” flowers grow in slightly dome-shaped clusters that reach 4” across. Petals feature two similar shades of red, providing a depth of color to Barcelona Red that feels like there is something beyond human perception (or at least beyond this human’s perception anyway!). Unlike other varieties of this species that require vernalization, Barcelona Red flowers prolifically in its first year, starting early and often going late into fall. Plants have a short stature, growing to 24” tall, with strong stems and exceptional vase life. May overwinter in zones 6-8 to bloom in subsequent years, but best grown as an annual. - [Sweet Pepper, Golden Apple (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-golden-apple-organic/): Small, round, orange bell peppers are deliciously sweet and great for snacking. Early maturity for an orange bell and so productive! We harvested dozens of fruit from each plant. Produces well in cool conditions and resists blossom end rot. Fruit holds well on and off the plant. Great paired with the sweet red pepper, Sunnybrook Pimento, for a fun color combination. While this golden apple is not likely to give you mythical abilities or alter your destiny, it sure does taste good. Bred by Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seed from his Stocky Gold Roaster, released in 2019. - [Purple Rapa Pop (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/greens/purple-rapa-pop-organic/): Add a purple pop to your salad mix, sauté mix, or bunching greens with Purple Rapa Pop -- a mild mustard green that is as versatile as it is varied. Leaves are a bit wavy, with colors ranging from bright green through dark purple, with some bright pink midribs that really pop! Vigorous plants grow best in the cool weather of fall through spring. The flavor gets more piquant as temperatures rise, but the colors get more vibrant as the temperatures fall. Plants are very winter hardy in the Pacific Northwest, and really develop  some intense colors after a frost or two. This classic diverse pop-ulation stems from the plant breeding playground of Frank Morton at Wild Garden Seeds, released way back in 2008. Aka, Purple Rapa Mix Gene Pool Mustard. - [Okra, Yuma Red (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/okra/okra-yuma-red-organic/): Gorgeous okra with red stems and pods and showy cream-colored hibiscus-like flowers. We have been impressed with Yuma Red’s productivity – it flowers late into the season on plants that grow to 5’ in our Pacific Northwest location. Plants are said to get much larger in hotter areas.  - [Larkspur, Sydney Blue Picotee (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/larkspur-sydney-blue-picotee-organic/): Towering spires hold dozens of 1.5” flowers that bloom continuously up stems reaching to 5’ tall. Sydney Blue Picotee’s petals are white in the center and gradually transition to dark lavender at the edges for a romantic cottage garden feel. Larkspurs are a bit difficult to germinate and notoriously finicky about transplanting, but certainly worth the effort! Cold tolerant for early spring planting, resulting in earlier blooms. Uniform, highly branching plants form loads of vertical stems that can also be dried for everlasting arrangements. Sydney Blue Picotee was 2007 FleuroSelect Gold Medal winner, but has since become hard to find. We sourced our original seed from the UK over a decade ago and are super excited to finally bring it to the Adaptive Seeds catalog. All parts of this plant are considered poisonous if consumed. - [Ageratum, Red Bouquet (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/ageratum-red-bouquet-organic/): One of the easiest cut flowers to grow. Red Bouquet Ageratum produces tons of small, fuzzy violet-red flowers that form in clusters atop 18 - 24” stems all summer long. Often thought of as a filler flower, we think it can be much more – with several stems bundled together, the intense color and texture makes for a great central feature in a bouquet. Stems are the perfect length for cutting. Flowers are long lasting in the vase and dry nicely for use as an everlasting. Also a great choice for garden beds and containers where plants will happily sit around looking pretty and enticing butterflies for a long time before going to seed. Deer resistant. And, did we mention that it is super easy to grow? May self-sow in some environments. The species is native to Central America. Aka, Floss Flower. - [Flour Corn, Starburst Manna Parching (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/corn/flour-corn-starburst-manna-parching-organic/): A beautiful flour corn bred by Carol Deppe, author of some of the best books on plant breeding, and breeder of many of our favorite varieties – including Candystick Delicata, Goldini 2 Zucchini, and Cascade Ruby Gold Flint Corn. Starburst Manna Parching corn produces about 50% single color ears in whites, reds, and oranges - and 50% ears with a beautiful starburst pattern in a combination of those colors. Very striking! As with all of Carol’s varieties, this corn is bred for cool soil emergence in the spring, a short growing season, and, above all - flavor! A good choice for grinding into corn flour or making masa. The different colors have different interesting flavor profiles. However, this corn’s super power is using the starburst kernels for parching - roasting on a dry skillet until the kernels “pop” into home-made corn nuts. The starburst kernels are extra delicious cooked this way. For more info, read a little piece Carol wrote about parching corn. Starburst Manna is a selection Carol made while breeding Magic Manna flour corn. Plants grow to about 5’ tall, primary cobs are about 8” long. - [Bush Snap Bean, Grenoble (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beans/bush-snap-bean-grenoble-organic/): Tender and tasty fancy green bush snap bean that holds quality late into the season. One of the sweetest and most delicious green beans, Grenoble always ranks at the top of the list in our flavor trials. Whereas most modern bush snap beans have a more determinant growth habit that causes them to go big and then go home, Grenoble goes big and then… keeps on going! We were snacking on a few delicious and tender green beans even while harvesting seed for this variety – despite plants not having been irrigated for over a month! This trait is not ideal for seed production but we’re not complaining – having field snacks at harvest was a nice treat.  - [Marigold, Yellow Supreme (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/marigold-yellow-supreme-organic/): With big yellow pom-poms that seem impossibly bright, Yellow Supreme Marigold appears dayglow when the light hits it just right. To borrow from the description for Yellowest Yellow paint by Stuart Semple, “Visible light is powerfully reflected by this high pigment” … flower. Sunglasses are recommended. This ultra-bright flower is available to everyone except Anish Kapoor! (who won't share his black paint color!). :)  Plants stay relatively small for an African marigold, at around two feet, but still produce loads of 3”-4”, double blooms on stems that are just long enough to make good cut flowers. We traced Yellow Supreme back to Livingston’s seed catalog from 1934, when the catalog hilariously boasted, “Not yet entered in All-American Selections but surely commands a Gold Medal position.” We greatly appreciate Select Seeds of Connecticut for helping keep this classic variety from going extinct and for being a wonderful source of rare flower seeds for us to play with. - [Hot Pepper, Jala-Spike Jalapeño (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-jala-spike-jalapeno-organic/): Jala-Spike Jalapeño is the hotter and pointier compliment to our Party Popper Jalapeño. This spike of capsaicin is nearly as hot as a serrano pepper but has the flavor and shape of a traditional 3-3.5” long jalapeño. After almost a decade of selecting our ideal jalapeño from a high quality commercial hybrid, we arrived at this and the Party Popper. We had a hard time choosing our favorite so now we have released both.  - [Hot Pepper, Peach Torch Habanero (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-peach-torch-habanero-organic/): Peach Torch is the third and final release from our habanero x Aji Limon project trilogy. It is a happy medium, both in appearance and heat-level, between the hotter Limón Lightning and the milder Orange Embers Habanero. Although not quite as hot as a traditional habanero, it still packs some intense heat, along with a special tropical aroma that makes it irresistible. So far our favorite use has been pickled with carrots or dried into a phenomenally flavorful pepper powder. When picked under-ripe they work great for Yucatán-style green habanero hot sauce. Compact bushes produce abundant yields of small, flame-shaped fruit that are a peachy-orange color when ripe. As with all of our peppers, Peach Torch has the ability to ripen outdoors in areas with relatively cool summers. It has also shown great seedling vigor when compared to other habanero varieties. The peach color is reminiscent of Sugar Rush Peach, but this pepper is a different species. - [Green Onion, Altai (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/green-onion-altai-organic/): The Altai Onion of Siberia is the fabled possible ancestor of Allium fistulosum, the scallion/green onion/bunching onions we all know and love. Rich, spicy flavor and heavy duty winter hardiness make Altai Onion an excellent perennial vegetable. Seemingly a cultivated selection from the wild type, this strain grows strong and tall, forming clumps. It more resembles a robust dark-green cultivated green onion than the slow growing short wild types found in the USDA GRIN repository or those found growing on cliffs around Lake Baikal. A fun slice of onion history, yet somehow still lacking a clear history! While we are not totally confident that this is Allium altaicum, we have not observed any crossing with Allium fistulosum when they are grown side by side. This one is truly for the onion nerds out there! Do you (as they say) “know your onions”? After trialing several sources of Altai Onion we chose this one, sourced from Prairie Garden Seeds in Canada. - [Onion, Buan (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/onion-buan-organic/): A semi-flat yellow onion from Ireland with remarkably good flavor. So tasty it even impressed our good friend Elanor, a market grower turned seed grower with decades of experience growing (and storing and eating!) many varieties of onions. Buan is one of the longest storing onions we offer, lasting well through winter and into spring. Grows fairly large - up to 4.5” across. This treasure of Ireland’s agricultural heritage is also a gene bank success story: Bred by Barnie Crombie in Ireland in the 1980s, it was thought to be lost. The Irish Seed Savers Association (ISSA) was able to obtain some seed from the Vavilov Institute in Russia in 1997 and rematriated it, and Buan can now be found from several sources. According to ISSA, “Buan the is Irish for ‘enduring’, so named to highlight its great storage life, but now an even better suited name as it’s the onion that the Irish just won’t forget.”    - [Lettuce, Red-Winged Blackbird (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/lettuce/lettuce-red-winged-blackbird-organic/): Named for one of the most abundant, and boldly colored, birds of North America. The name was inspired by a flock of RWBLs (yes, we are bird-nerds!) that moved in to glean the remnants of our sunflower seed crop while our first crop of this lettuce seed matured nearby. Lucky for us, they chased away the lettuce seed-eating finches and we had a bountiful harvest! Red-Winged Blackbird Lettuce leaves are vibrant green at the base and transition to bold, rosy red. Small heads grow to 8-9” with crisp leaves that are the perfect size for adding to a sandwich or using in salad mix when small.  - [Tomato, Montserrat (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-montserrat-organic/): We have been experimenting with storage tomatoes for years and have found most of them to be well, meh, flavor-wise. What is the point of a tomato in December or January if it doesn’t taste good? Enter Montserrat, a hanging tomato from the Catalonia autonomous region of Spain. Fruit are traditionally strung on ristras and eaten into the winter months, but we have had success simply placing them in a cardboard tray. Montserrat produces flattened, 2-3” wide fruit with high dry matter content and thick skin, which contributes to its storage life. Bright flavor and good texture for “fresh” eating well into the winter months, whether sliced on toast or into salads. They frequently end up on the final hamburger or BLT of the year. Plants seem to have some disease resistance as they look healthy and continue producing well after most of the tomato patch has given up. Seed was originally brought as a gift by travelers from Catalonia and passed along to us a few years back. Note: This variety was received as Montserrat, however it appears to be a unique strain, as other tomatoes available with the same name are much more hollow inside than this one. - [Aster, Tower Violet (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/aster-tower-violet-organic/): We have become enamored with China asters the past few years as a late season focal flower for bouquets or bedding plants. With its dramatic royal purple peony-like blossoms, Tower Violet kept the love alive for 2025. Plants grow to about 2’ tall and 1’ wide, with blooms that average 2”-3” across. Strong stems offer good vase life, however plants may benefit from support in the garden. Because shortening day length is what initiates flowering, China asters are a little late to start blooming, but once they get going they keep going all season long - especially when harvested or deadheaded regularly. - [Rudbeckia, Sahara (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/rudbeckia-sahara-organic/): Sahara Rudbeckia is one of the flowers in our fields that nearly every visitor pauses to admire, and most say they want to grow. With a unique color palette of smoky hues ranging from golden to rose, and burgundy to chocolate (sometimes seemingly all in one flower!), the 3”-4” wide, double flowers have a lot to offer. Great aesthetics, combined with strong stems and long bloom time have led Sahara Rudbeckia to become a standby for many floral designers (even though some may wish that the stems were a bit longer). Perhaps best of all: The plants have strong perennial tendencies and start blooming fairly early in their second and subsequent seasons, and continue blooming well into the fall. Plants stay relatively small, at 20”-24”, and look great in garden beds and containers, too. Aka, Black-Eyed Susan. - [Blossom Shallot Seed (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/blossom-shallot-seed-organic/): Blossom Shallot produces large classic shallots with a round bulb shape that is a nice variation from the other shallots we offer. Bulbs have tan skins with light pink interiors. The flavor can be described as sweet and mild for a shallot, with a rich alluring aroma when sliced or diced. Excellent for fresh eating and particularly well suited for adding a gourmet touch to just about anything, or simply adding a delightful kick to a salad dressing. A good choice for fried shallots or anything needing a little raw shallot magic. Dependably productive - often yielding 1 lb or more from each bulb planted. Little is known about its history other than decades ago it was distributed as "Pink Seeds Blüm" shallot. - [Rosso di Sulmona Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/rosso-di-sulmona-garlic-organic/): Rosso di Sulmona is a highly sought after Italian garlic variety often simply referred to as "Aglio Rosso". Flavor is said to be delicate (even sweet for a garlic) and there are many claims of it being the best flavored garlic in Italy or even the world. While we think this is probably classic culinary hyperbole or some fun poetic license -- which we may also be guilty of from time to time -- we do think it is truly delicious and is a great all-purpose garlic. Excellent long storage life similar to other creole type garlic varieties. May bolt like a hardneck, depending on location and growing conditions. Grows well in warm climates. Originated near the town of Sulmona, which is in the Abruzzo region of central Italy and is famous for its annual garlic festival. - [Zeramarez Seed Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/zeramarez-seed-garlic-organic/): Zeramarez is a newly developed True Garlic Seed (TGS) progeny bred by Avram Drucker of Garlicana in Douglas County, Oregon. Selected for flavor, beauty and productivity, this new variety is truly special and a favorite of Garlicana's TGS releases. A great choice for those who like it hot – when freshly dug, it has been described by one garlic aficionado as the hottest garlic they have ever eaten. We find the raw cloves to have a very hot initial bite with a nice clean finish that does not linger too long. Large bulbs and large cloves are all wrapped up in beautiful purple and pink stripes. Late harvest and moderately good storability. A selection made out of the Azataza lineage of True Garlic Seed progeny. - [“The Seed Farmer” By Dan Brisebois](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/books/the-seed-farmer-by-dan-brisebois/): By Dan Brisebois, 2024. 256 pages. Paperback. - [Celosia, Sokoyokoto / Lagos Spinach (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/greens/celosia-sokoyokoto-lagos-spinach-organic/): An important leafy green from Nigeria and West Africa that is becoming more well known in North America as an easy to grow, culturally significant food. Used in a similar fashion to Callaloo amaranth greens and is similarly heat resistant. Culinary quality is best before flowering and when leaves are young. Most often cooked into soups and stews, and - as the name implies - is a great spinach substitute during the heat of summer. But don’t be fooled – Sokoyokoto is not simply a substitute! It has a delicious unique flavor that is a crucial ingredient for the Nigerian stew Efo Riro and is one of the most important greens throughout West Africa. - [Caraway, Sprinter (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/caraway-sprinter-organic/): This fragrant addition to the garden-grown spice rack is fun and easy to grow! Caraway grows to about 2’ tall with a feathery growth habit not unlike its herbal cousins dill, fennel, anise, and cumin. Perhaps most well known for its use in sauerkraut and rye bread, caraway seed is also a delicious addition to hearty soups, stews and some Eastern European cheeses. The fresh leaves may also be used in salads or as a potherb. Caraway was once widely used as a digestive aid in traditional herbalism. White umbelliferous flowers form in June and July and are attractive to small pollinators such as hoverflies. Seed does not shatter, making harvest a breeze. Caraway is usually a biennial herb but this variety has been selected for annual production.  - [Rudbeckia, Gloriosa Double Daisy (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/rudbeckia-gloriosa-double-daisy-organic/): Large, bright yellow / golden black-eyed Susans form atop exceptionally tall (3’-4’!) stems. Most plants produce 5”-6” fully double flowers with copious amounts of petals, but a few single or semi-double flowers can be expected - all are beautiful!  All flower types produced by Gloriosa Double Daisy Rudbeckia seem to last forever in the garden and also hold up well in a vase. We grew this variety upon recommendation of a trusted friend who grew cut flowers at the Oregon Coast, and it is now on the short list of flowers we want to grow every year. Originally a 1961 AAS Flower Winner that lost some uniformity in subsequent decades, it has recently been reselected beautifully by Wild Garden Seed, where we sourced our seed for planting. Perennial in zones 9-10. - [Tricolor Daisy, Fancy Pants Mix (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/tricolor-daisy-fancy-pants-mix-organic/): Daisy-like flowers in a wide array of color patterns make this mix a fun addition to the garden. Colors form in concentric circles around dark reddish brown centers and range from white to pale and dark yellows, oranges, salmon, pinks, reds and even lavender and burgundy! Profuse quantities of 1”-3” blooms form over a long season and keep going right up until frost. Plants grow to about 2’-3’ tall and wide. Makes a good cut flower. Shoots and young leaves are edible. Native to North Africa and has naturalized in temperate areas around the world. Aka, Painted Daisy, Tricolor Chrysanthemum, Annual Chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum carinatum. - [Tomatillo, Amethyst & Emerald Geodes (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatillos-ground-cherry/tomatillo-amethyst-emerald-geodes-organic/): This breeding project has been a long time coming and we are super proud of the results! After noticing a Plaza Latina Giant Green tomatillo with an interesting purple blush, Andrew decided to use the serendipitous cross to breed a new tomatillo. Little did we know that Andrew’s favorite fruit has quite the wild outcrossing potential and a desire to be as diverse as possible. It took 7 years to start seeing anything predictable in the population and we have now gotten to a point where we can call it a new variety. - [Marigold, Red Metamorph (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/marigold-red-metamorph-organic/): Aptly named, the flowers of Red Metamorph marigold are a deep red in the cooler temperatures of spring and fall but shift towards orange and yellow in hotter weather! Small blooms are 1.5” - 2” across with uniquely scalloped petals. The sturdy plants grow 2-3’ tall and bloom continuously from June until frost. A great choice to attract small beneficial pollinators. Planting marigolds like these at the ends of garden beds has been a long-time organic gardening practice to help repel pests and increase the likelihood of a successful harvest from the whole garden. One of the many great marigolds bred by the late, great Dr. Alan Kapuler, and named for the alien shapeshifters in Robert Silverberg’s Majipoor novels. - [Beet, Radicle Rainbow Beet Blend (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beets/beet-radicle-rainbow-beet-blend-organic/): Grow a diverse rainbow of beets in your garden with our Radicle Rainbow Beet Blend! This radicle (and radical!) mix includes everything a person could want in beets - they’re beautiful, delicious, and nutritious! It's a great way to sample many varieties to find your favorite, or stick with the mix to continue tasting the rainbow. Blend consists of five varieties with differing days to maturity for an extended harvest window: Chioggia (candy striped, round), Forono (dark red, cylindrical), Kamuolini 2 (darkest red, round), Lutz Green Leaf (lightest red, round/tapered), and Touchstone Gold (gold/yellow, round). - [Aster, Valkyrie Brunhilde Chamois (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/aster-valkyrie-brunhilde-chamois-organic/): Captivating, pale pink/apricot blossoms with needle-like petals resemble sea anemones. Valkyrie Brunhilde Chamois Asters make a fabulous late summer bloom, and they might have the greatest name ever given to a flower. Stunning flowers grow to 5.5” across and form on short, sturdy plants that grow to 2.5’ tall. Don’t let the delicate appearance deceive you - flowers and stems are durable and hold up well in the garden and in the vase. Late to mature but well worth the wait! We have selected these to have a uniform color and petal type. - [Dent Corn, Wildfire (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/corn/dent-corn-wildfire-organic/): After several years of collaboration with the Dry Farming Institute, we are thrilled to offer Wildfire Dent Corn, a dry farming selection of our own Open Oak Party Mix Dent Corn. Received as breeding material from Dr. Lucas Nebert, of Oregon State University. Wildfire Dent Corn has been collaboratively selected under, and for, dry farming conditions, as well as for increased culinary potential for tortillas. The population still produces some flinty kernels, which make great polenta.  - [Bush Dry Bean, Agassiz Pinto (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beans/bush-dry-bean-agassiz-pinto-organic/): Let’s be honest, if we were stranded on a desert island and could only have one dry bean to grow and eat, it would be pinto beans. Pinto beans were perhaps the only dry bean either of us ever knew growing up in Southern California, where they are a staple ingredient in So. Cal. Mexican cuisine - most often refried into salty gooey goodness and added to burritos. Traditional pinto bean varieties just don’t do very well here in the maritime Pacific Northwest and modern commercial pintos never quite tasted right, so for many years we simply resigned ourselves to refrying various other sorts of short season beans. Then we found Agassiz Pinto, an early maturing variety that tastes like a pinto should and performs well in our PNW climate. Agassiz Pinto is a gourmet quality bean, breaking the stereotype of pintos being boring and ordinary. In 2024, when one of our bean plantings was damaged by seed corn maggots in cool soil, we tilled it in and planted Agassiz Pinto in its place. In spite of being planted in mid-June - three full weeks after the rest of the field - the Agassiz Pinto was the first to be harvested! Agassiz Pinto produces small, flat beans that are the quintessential pinto tan with brown speckles. This northern adapted variety was developed by Rodgers Brothers Seed in Idaho and has been in commercial production in Idaho and central Oregon since the 1990s. Compact bush habit that occasionally sends out short runners. Resistant to Bean Common Mosaic Virus. The seed originally came to us via Prairie Garden Seeds, a farm-direct organic seed company in Saskatchewan, Canada. - [Winter Squash, Green Hokkaido Kabocha (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/squash/winter-squash-green-hokkaido-kabocha-organic/): Japanese winter squash with dark green skin and bright orange flesh. Sweet, rich, nutty flavor and dense, flaky texture is good enough to eat plain. In Japan, Green Hokkaido Kabocha is commonly steamed or used in tempura. While the go-to method for cooking kabocha in North America is oven roasted, it makes a great stand-in for sweet potato fries and also shines in curries. A highly anticipated autumn delicacy at farmers markets for a reason. It’s quickly become a favorite winter squash of the Adaptive Seeds crew. Fruit is fairly uniform in size with an average weight of 2 - 3 lbs. Late season irrigation may cause fruit to split so be sure to harvest promptly. When harvested and stored properly, fruit keeps well into January. Our strain of this heritage variety came to us originally via Biodynamic plant breeders in Germany and we are excited to further select it for our own growing conditions. - [Parsley, Forest Green (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/parsley-forest-green-organic/): With its extra curly leaves, Forest Green parsley has a very enticing and familiar appearance. Flavor is less bold than flat leaf parsley, making it great for adding a little fresh zing and color to heavy or richly flavored recipes. Not just for garnishes, curly parsley is key for recipes like potato salad or beef stew, when you don’t want to be overpowered by too much herbal flavor. Strong, upright, medium-long stems are perfect for bunching and easy to harvest. Stems are also tasty and resemble little celery stalks that are great chopped and added to soups and stews. Forest Green is a classic curly parsley that is not as absurdly curled as moss curled types. The dark green plants are very winter hardy here in the PNW, easily surviving the ice storm of January 2024. If left to bolt and flower in its second year, parsley becomes an incredible insectary hedge, attracting all kinds of beneficial insects such as hoverflies and tiny predatory wasps. Our strain of this parsley originally came from Wild Garden Seeds and has been selected for decades to grow well under organic conditions. - [Tomato, California Sungold (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-california-sungold-organic/): This may be the closest anybody has gotten to recreating the sweet, fruity flavor of the classic hybrid tomato Sungold in an open pollinated version. Whereas most attempts to develop an open-pollinated Sungold have started with dehybridizing (i.e., saving seeds from) the legendary Japanese F1 hybrid, tomato breeders Kanti Rawal and Steve Peters took a different approach and started by crossing the types of fruit that Sungold was purportedly bred from. This approach was clearly a success! Bright orange cherry tomatoes form in clusters on vigorous indeterminant plants that grow to a medium height, perfect for trellising with the classic California/Florida weave. Nearly as sweet as Sungold with characteristic thin skin but less prone to splitting. The undisputed winner of our sungold substitute variety trials; we’ve taken to calling it California Fungold! 12-25 gram fruit. Descended from one of our other favorite cherry tomatoes, Rosita Brandywine Cherry. - [Tomato, Magic Bullet (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-magic-bullet-organic/): Magical colors and flavors are packed into these spectacular plum-shaped fruits that are perfect for snacking. Magic Bullet tomato is unlike any other tomato we have ever seen or tasted. It’s as if all the colors and flavors of giant heirlooms and sweet cherry tomatoes are concentrated into a two bite explosive package! Or if gushers candies were actually good, 10 x larger, and tasted like tomatoes. The colors of the fruit are a psychedelic carpet ride on the outside and a melting gemstone swirl on the inside. Vigorous indeterminate plants yield fruit with a firm texture that are resistant to cracking and Blossom End Rot. Guaranteed to knock your socks off. This modern day open pollinated tomato marvel was developed by Steve Peters and Kanti Rawal of Seed rEvolution Now! Highly recommended for market growers, as the fruit is delicious, fills pints quickly, keeps very well and is distinctive enough to keep customers coming back for more. - [Onion, Zébrune Shallot-Onion (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/onion-zebrune-shallot-onion-organic/): Large, copper-pink, torpedo-shaped bulbs have sweet and mild flavor and store well. While technically an onion, we use the designation shallot-onion because its appearance and culinary qualities more closely resemble shallots: Narrow rings, high dry matter and excellent storage life, but most importantly - delicate flavor. In France, where the variety is from, this type of onion is known as eschallion, a portmanteau of the French words for shallot and onion. Zébrune Shallot-Onion was an instant crew favorite and we have fun calling them Chicken Legs here on the farm, though due to their size they might more appropriately be called Turkey Legs. Known in France as Cuisse de Poulet (Chicken Leg) du Poitou or Zébrune. - [Strawflower, Firefly (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/strawflower-firefly-organic/): Striking, fiery red and orange colored strawflowers were selected out of the classic Monstrosum Mix. We selected this variety over many years in an attempt to produce a stable, single color. However, Firefly strawflower had other plans, and continues to provide a diversity of flame-like color combinations. Producing both light and dark orange petals with varying degrees of red accents, Firefly would be good design inspiration for a spaceship or rocket engine. The papery blooms make great additions to dried flower arrangements and wreaths. Tall plants grow up to  3.5’  tall and are covered with 1.5"-2.5” flowers that can even stand up to a few light autumn frosts, providing loads of strawflowers continually from July through October in many areas. Aka. Helichrysum. - [Bountiful Bundle of Garlic & Shallots – 3 lbs (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/bountiful-bundle-of-garlic-shallots-3-lbs-organic/): An easy choice for those who want to plant a bunch of garlic and shallots and can’t decide which varieties to grow. The Bountiful Bundle of Garlic and Shallots features 1/2 lb quantities of each year's most bountiful garlic and shallot varieties. For 2026, this collection includes Music and Romanian Red (both hardneck porcelain types), Persephone White (softneck silverskin type), Polish White (softneck artichoke type), and Shvelisi (hardneck purple stripe type), as well as Blossom Shallots. A good way to get to know many different varieties and flavor profiles in one growing season - at a bit of a discount, too! - [Bigger Bountiful Bundle of Garlic & Shallots – 6 lbs (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/bigger-bountiful-bundle-of-garlic-shallots-6-lbs-organic/): An easy choice for those who want to plant a bunch of garlic and shallots and can’t decide which varieties to grow. The Bountiful Bundle of Garlic and Shallots features 1 lb quantities of each year's most bountiful garlic and shallot varieties. For 2026, this collection includes and Music and Romanian Red (both hardneck porcelain type), Persephone White (softneck silverskin type), Polish White (softneck artichoke type), and Shvelisi (hardneck purple stripe type), as well as Blossom Shallots. A good way to get to know many different varieties and flavor profiles in one growing season - at a bit of a discount, too! - [Leek, Babington’s (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/leeks/leek-babingtons-organic/): Babington's Leek is a special perennial vegetable that is propagated from top-setting bulbils. Occasionally found growing wild in the British Isles where it may be native, but extremely rare in North America. A worthwhile plant to have growing in any garden but especially sought after for semi-wild perennial permaculture plantings and food forest edges. While it is possible to sow annually for vegetable harvest of small delicious leeks, Babington's Leek really shines as a cut and come again perennial. - [Comic Book: “Adventures in Seed Saving #2: Tomato”](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/books/comic-adventures-in-seed-saving-2-tomato/): By Quin Shakra and Goda Trakumaite. 2022. 8 pages. - [Comic Book: “Adventures in Seed Saving #1: Squash”](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/books/comic-adventures-in-seed-saving-1-squash/): By Quin Shakra and Goda Trakumaite. 2018. 8 pages. - [Adaptive Seeds Floor Sweepings Ultimate Seed Mix](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/collections-mixes/mixes/floor-sweepings-mix/): Limited Time Offer! These collections are an assortment of 7 flowers chosen to create a flower patch with a mix of colors, plant textures and layers, and a prolonged blooming period. Pick either our Annual or Perennial collection. - [Perilla, Early Select Kkaennip (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/perilla-early-select-kkaennip-organic/): A classic Korean perilla / kkaennip, with strongly flavored green leaves reminiscent of mint and basil. This type of perilla is an essential green in Korean cooking. Leaves can be used in many ways including pickled as Kkaennip Kimchi or used as wraps similar to using lettuce or napa cabbage. Perilla is sometimes grown for its seeds, which are highly nutritious and full of edible oil that can easily be pressed. We sourced our strain of Kkaennip from a somewhat generic Korean seed packet and found those seeds produced a few plants that matured seed better in our climate and latitude. Perilla is day-length sensitive and producing seed has been challenging here in Oregon. We hope to select this variety further to make growing it easier at our 44°N latitude. Japanese varieties of perilla are known as shiso and were once thought to be a different subspecies but the two types have been shown to share a gene pool. Perilla is also used in Thai and Vietnamese cuisine, and is one of the 50 fundamental herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine where it is called "zi su." Aka, deulkkae or sesame leaf. - [Epazote, Oaxaca Red (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/epazote-oaxaca-red-organic/): Pungent leafy herb used in many Mexican recipes, especially good when combined with beans or soups. Oaxaca Red Epazote is a special red leaf variation of the often green-leafed plant. Perhaps most famous for its anti-flatulence properties when used in the preparation of dry beans, Epazote offers culinary benefits as well as a digestive assist. Some classic usages, other than cooked with beans, are in soups, tamales, combined with huitlacoche or added to green salsas for chilaquiles. One of the most unique culinary flavors in the world. Used in Mexico since prehispanic times and its name is from the Nahuatl word epazōtl. Some say the scent is like turpentine but the harshness mellows quickly when lightly cooked, becoming complex and difficult to describe. Other common names including Mexican Tea and Wormseed point to its traditional uses as a digestive aid that calms bloating and stomach cramps, and its traditional use as a vermifuge. This red selection originates in Oaxaca, Mexico, and came to us via Richters in Canada. - [Basil, Opalescent (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/basil-opalescent-organic/): Strikingly beautiful, ruffled dark purple basil. Opalescent basil is both an ornamental and a culinary herb. Refreshing flavor profile is reminiscent of the anise-clove combo of Thai basil, while preserving some sweet Genovese-adjacent and fruity aromatics. Makes a great fresh herb topping for dishes such as Vietnamese phở, or use as an elegant edible garnish. Adds a distinct flavor and beautiful pink/purple tint to marinades, salad dressings, or a simple syrup that could be amazing in the hands of the right mixologist. The glossy leaves are occasionally mottled with green and have ruffled edges that add a nice visual appeal not only in the garden but also as a summer foliage plant for bouquets. Plants grow quite large, up to 30” tall with long stems and benefit from staking if allowed to reach full size. Pollinators go crazy for it when it’s flowering and the small lavender-pink flowers contrast nicely against the dark foliage. From the botanical wizardry of Frank Morton of Wild Garden Seeds, who crossed Mrihani, an African landrace basil, and a purple basil type called Opal. We selected this F6 for more solidly dark purple foliage. - [Ashwagandha Vedic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/ashwagandha-vedic-organic/): One of the classic herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, Vedic Ashwagandha has been used as an adaptogen to help manage stress and for its nerve calming effect. Traditionally used in India and Africa as a revitalizing and libido enhancing tonic, ashwagandha is native to India and has been utilized there for centuries. Grown for its intensely aromatic roots, which have an oddly musky aroma that certainly awakens the senses. 2-3 ft tall plants are related to tomatoes and ground cherries. The husked fruit turn red late in the growing season and are not considered edible. Roots are dug in the fall and either dried or made into tincture. Our seed stock originates from the excellent Strictly Medicinal Seeds in Williams, Oregon. Aka, Indian Ginseng. - [Lettuce, Oscarde (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/lettuce/lettuce-oscarde-organic/): The red oakleaf lettuce that really got the organic salad mix game going! Oscarde Lettuce has the great combination of dark cherry-red outer leaves with ultra fine red-brown dappling on inner leaf areas, becoming green at the heart. This makes Oscarde look good even when sunlight is not as plentiful; as in the cloudy early spring, under row cover, or in greenhouse conditions. Oscarde is both richly colored and tastes great. Best as a salad leaf or cut-and-come-again lettuce because the regrowth after picking young leaves is excellent. Very good cold weather tolerance and leaf disease resistance. Not the best for mid-summer hot weather production. We decided to produce seed of this variety when it vanished from the organic seed market for a year or two. We could not let this happen so we are bringing back this important and foundational variety. Originating with French lettuce seed breeders, Oscarde has been an important variety for North American organic farmers for decades. - [Zinnia, Queeny Limes Party Mix (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/zinnia-queeny-limes-party-mix-organic/): With its lime green highlights and soft overtones, the Queeny Lime series (aka, Queen Lime) took the cut flower market by storm when it was first introduced in the late 2010’s. Queeny Lime Orange received both All America Selection and Fleuroselect awards in 2018, and Queeny Lemon Peach won an AAS award in 2022. In addition to an innovative color palette, the Queeny series offers 3” wide, mostly double flowers with strong stems and good vase life. Sturdy plants grow to about 30” tall and produce late into the season. We decided to grow the series and let them cross pollinate freely, creating a Queeny Limes Party Mix. Partiers in the mix include ”Queeny Lime Mix”  “Queeny Orange Lime,” “Queeny Red Lime,” and “Queeny Lime Peach.” We skewed our seed saving efforts more towards the Lime, Orange Lime, and Lime Peach selections and away from the Red Lime; all varieties flowered together and were a favorite of bumble bees all season. Plant a patch and discover with us which colors are more dominant and what surprises await. If you want a “properly” curated mix, better head elsewhere ;).  Bred by Hugo Dittmar of Samen und Pflanzen in Switzerland. - [Sweet Pea, Jilly (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sweet-pea-jilly-organic/): Cream colored sweet peas add a hint of romance and elegance to the garden and to bouquets. Worth growing for their fragrance alone, and the long, strong stems make Jilly work exceptionally well in arrangements. A great choice for fall sowing for early spring blooms. Plants grow to about 4’ tall and flower until mid-July. Bred by Fred Harriss and introduced commercially in 1988 by Unwins in the UK. - [Strawflower, Purple Red (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/strawflower-purple-red-organic/): Super dark purple, like a deep shade of red wine, Purple Red strawflower is a fun change from the more commonly grown strawflower colors of bright oranges and yellows. Flowers grow to about 2” across but can be harvested at an earlier stage to avoid the yellow centers that appear when blooms are open. Widely used as an everlasting flower in dried arrangements and crafting. A favorite of smaller pollinators like hover flies and fairy bees. Plants can grow to 4-5’ tall and may benefit from staking. Often called Helichrysum in seed catalogs and in the flower trade. - [Poppy, Lucille (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/poppy-lucille-organic/): An impressively ruffled, bright red peony poppy with slight frosty edges that is sure to get your attention. Peony poppies are known for producing larger flowers that are fully double, and Lucille sports a poof of petals that seem unending. Our stock seed for this variety is from Wild Garden Seed, where it was isolated out of a mix of peony poppies. Named in honor of the one and only Lucille Ball, as suggested by Helen Dzubia. Strong stems grow to 4’. Tan seeds. - [Onion, Sweet Spanish Colorado #6 (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/onion-sweet-spanish-colorado-6-organic/): A lovely sweet onion with bronze skin and good storability, first released in 1936 by the Colorado State University Experiment Station in Rocky Ford. Sweet Spanish Colorado #6 stood out in our sweet onion trials first for its agronomic traits, and later for its delicious sweet onion flavor. We found it to be very high yielding with plants that are relatively quick to both size up and dry down. It also showed better field resistance to thrips and downy mildew than other varieties in our trials, and that’s not by accident. Apparently this onion is legendary in onion circles (or rings?) and is a parent line to many hybrid varieties. Speaking of rings…  Sweet Spanish Colorado #6 is a day-neutral variety so will reliably bulb up at any latitude. We sourced this variety originally from Burrell Seed Growers in Rocky Ford, Colorado. While they have not stocked the variety for some years, they said it was popular with onion growers there, who often just called it “Number 6.” - [Green Onion, Ton Hom Nuan (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/green-onion-ton-hom-nuan-organic/): A unique bunching onion from Thailand. Ton Hom Nuan green onion surprised us in its ability to produce tons of small green onions that are perfect for soups, stir frying, and sprinkling into salads. Unlike many Japanese negi type bunching onions, Ton Hom Nuan tend to hold their slender size for a long time in the garden. Extensive blanching of the stalks is not needed as they are harvested primarily for their long green tops. Thai green onions are used in many Thai recipes including Thai omelets (kai jeow), pad Thai, soups, and coconut curries. Very winter hardy in Oregon, so they can be harvested year round. Plants will multiply into larger clumps and may become perennial if left unharvested. - [Watermelon, Chou Cheh Red (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/watermelons/watermelon-chou-cheh-red-organic/): Chou Cheh Red has been lauded as the “Best. Watermelon. Ever.” and “sweetest” watermelon by some of our seed growing friends, and when fellow seed folk get behind a variety we listen! In addition to its addictive sweetness, we were pleasantly surprised to discover the relatively early yields even with so much flavor, since complex flavor and extra sweetness sometimes take extra time to develop. Fruit are on the small side and average around 4-6 lbs, so they’re easy to harvest, transport, and eat in one sitting. :) We plant our watermelon plants fairly close together, so they may size up bigger at a wider than 18” in-row spacing. Reported to show field resistance to Downy Mildew. Chou Cheh Red comes from Shaanxi Province, China, via the USDA seed bank (PI 435990), and was recently identified as a standout variety by Common Wealth Seed Growers. - [Hot Pepper, Orange Embers Habanero (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-orange-embers-habanero-organic/): Orange Embers Habanero is the end result of 8 years of selecting an easy to grow, early to mature orange habanero with a moderate heat level that is easier to use in recipes. Ranging anywhere from a quarter to half as hot as a typical habanero, Orange Embers still retains all of the flavor and aromatic spice that habaneros should have. Short plants are great for containers and are loaded with small orange fruit which resemble embers. The heat is spicy, but not burn-your-face-off hot – more like the heat of smoldering embers than a raging fire.  Orange Embers originated from a chance cross between a yellow Aji Limon and an orange hybrid habanero. This wide cross offered us the perfect opportunity to select several very different new peppers, including Limón Lightning. Perfect added to pickled carrots or for producing hot sauces with a tropical character. We are super excited to finally introduce these gems and to pledge them with the Open Source Seed Initiative! - [Hot Pepper, Limón Lightning (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-limon-lightning-organic/): Limón Lightning is the same species as habanero peppers and is the hottest pepper we offer. Bright, bold yellow peppers ripen early enough for outdoor cultivation at our location in Oregon. Short plants produce high yields of slender peppers that average 2 ½" long by ¾" wide. Limón Lightning brings a biting capsaicin punch paired with tropical citrusy, habanero aromatics. While many hot peppers have a building heat, this one has a kind of fiery sting that fades relatively quickly. The flavor and heat profile combine to make Limón Lightning an excellent candidate for hot sauce. - [Sweet Pepper, Pusztagold (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-pusztagold-organic/): Pusztagold is an early maturing, high yielding sweet pepper that starts as a creamy shade of yellow when under-ripe and matures to a bright orange-red, giving a nice color spectrum on both the plant and the plate. Fruit have a sweet, bright flavor at all stages of maturity, becoming even sweeter as they ripen to red. Hungarian peppers of this type lack the harsh bite that is so common with modern green bell peppers, making them great for snacking or adding raw to salads. Tapered bell shape is good for stuffing, with 2”-3” wide shoulders that narrow a bit towards the blossom end. Hungarian peppers are widely acknowledged to be among the best in the world; this excellent variety has thick flesh and thin skin.  - [Tomato, Thai Grape (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-thai-grape-organic/): Small-fruited red grape tomato produces all season and continues to pump out high quality, deliciously sweet fruit late into the season after so many other varieties have lost the flavor edge. Fruit hold exceptionally well both on and off the plant. Thai Grape is a good representation of the classic grape tomato traits of firmer, meatier texture and fewer seeds preferred by many tomato aficionados. Plants grow to 5’ tall, fruit is borne in fairly dense clusters. Late season crew favorite in 2022 and 2023! - [Tomato, Altai Orange (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-altai-orange-organic/): This gorgeous tomato was love at first sight when we trialed it – well, maybe it was love at first taste. And that wasn’t just because it was the first big tomato we tasted that season, although it was among the earliest to mature. Giant beefsteak fruit ripen early and shine like bright orange suns against the hedge of green tomato foliage and the underripe fruit of other, later varieties. Fruit is meaty with smooth texture, lightly fruity aroma, and relatively few seeds. With an average weight of 12 oz - 1 lb, they are large enough that a slice fills out an entire piece of bread, making it the perfect candidate for summer’s daily tomato sandwich. Resists cracking. With tomatoes you can often have two out of three: early maturity, great flavor, and large fruit. Somehow Altai Orange delivers on all three. Originally from Russia, Aka, Altaiskiy Oranzhevyi. - [Hot Pepper, Party Popper Jalapeño (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-party-popper-jalapeno-organic/): Plump, productive, early, and spicy Jalapeño. Fun, slightly rounded shaped, 3 - 3 1/2" long fruit are perfect for stuffing and roasting. Plants produce a concentrated set of thick-walled fruit and most fruit turn red before frost. We love the green fruit for salsa, escabeche, and especially for oven roasted Jalapeño poppers. The fully ripe, red fruit makes a great sriracha or fermented hot sauce. Party Popper Jalapeño was selected by us here at Adaptive Seeds over 6 years for excellent yield and adaptability in Pacific Northwest climate conditions. In the spirit of the Culinary Breeding Network, we collaborated with our friends at Party Downtown Restaurant in Eugene, Oregon to develop this pepper. Party Downtown has used them in hot sauces and as an ingredient in their excellent spicy chicken wings. Party Popper Jalapeño is a de-hybridized selection of a once popular, but no longer commercially available, F1 hybrid. Like its parent, it has a nice smooth green skin that is slow to check and resists anthocyanin purple blushing. It is frustrating for many growers when their favorite F1 is dropped by the seed trade. This is another reason why open pollinated seed is so important: if you like it, you can easily save seeds and keep the variety going! - [Anise Hyssop, Snow Spike (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/anise-hyssop-snow-spike-organic/): Snow Spike is an aptly named ornamental white flowered selection of the upper-midwest native wildflower that touts edible flowers and leaves as well as purported medicinal qualities. The minty licorice flavor makes a wonderful relaxing, throat soothing, and decongesting tea. The flowers and leaves are great for adding a bright flavor to salads, soups, desserts and drinks. The slightly bitter minty leaves blend well with other greens to make unique mixed salads. The flavor is milder than the related species Agastache rugosa Korean Licorice Mint, and their colors complement each other in the garden. Productive plants grow 3-4’ tall and 18” wide and will go dormant in the winter, but show good perennial regrowth in raised beds, containers, and well-drained soils. The prolific flowers are known for producing huge amounts of nectar for bees and beneficial insects. Attracts butterflies, honey bees, many native bees, as well as hummingbirds and night flying moths. - [Marigold, Kees’ Orange (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/marigold-kees-orange-organic/): Orange flowers have been selected to be the most vibrant, vivid orange color possible. Kees' Orange marigold is an "African" marigold (aka, Mexican marigold) that is a great choice for cut flower production. Plants grow 3-4' tall and produce many 3” wide double petaled blooms. Marigold flowers are well known for their natural dye properties. They also dry well and their subtle aromatics and vibrant color makes them a great addition to potpourri. Blooms of Kees' Orange are larger and rounder than many other marigold varieties when dried, making them well suited for Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations and festive garland production. So-called African marigolds actually originate in Central America but were erroneously thought by European horticulturalists to be from Africa. They arrived in Europe via Africa just like "French beans" came to England via France from South America. Gotta love botanical misnomers! A variety selected by the famous Dutch flower breeder Kees Sahin. - [Carrot, Cosmic Purple (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/carrots/carrot-cosmic-purple-organic/): Cosmic Purple carrot combines great color with a delicious flavor often only present in orange carrots. Vibrant reddish purple roots have orange interiors. Six to eight inch tapered roots have an appealing shape similar to Danvers type carrots and tolerate heavy soils. Cosmic Purple carrot scored high marks in our trials for appearance, aroma, and texture. The overall flavor profile is balanced with sweetness and rich carroty aromatics making it highly snackable. Vigorous growth and good canopy cover help make it reliable and easy to grow. Developed at USDA ARS in Madison, Wisconsin, with breeding led by Dr. Philipp Simon and released in 2005. - [Sunflower, Better Off Red (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sunflower-better-off-red-organic/): We are excited to offer our improved version of Red Sun Sunflower! Better Off Red began with a few seeds from a self-pollination of the best and reddest plants in a mix of a (barely red at all) population of so-called Red Sun Sunflower. Re-selected and stabilized over several years, we are now happy to offer a better line of Red Sun that is actually red! Rich, brick-red petals turn a burnt orange as the flowers mature and begin developing seeds. This combination of colors lends a warm, earthy character to the flower patch. Plants average around 6’ tall and form many side branches, ensuring a long season for pollinators, flower gazers, and avian seed snackers to enjoy. - [Adaptive Seeds Gift Certificate](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/gift-cards/adaptive-seeds-gift-certificate/): On the hunt for the perfect gift? Look no further! - [Winter Squash, Sugar Loaf Hessel (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/squash/winter-squash/winter-squash-sugar-loaf-hessel-organic/): A slight variation on the classic delicata, Sugar Loaf is a sister variety to Honey Boat with a similar tan color and green stripes but with a shorter, blockier (some might even say loaf) shape. Deliciously sweet fruits average 1-2 lbs. Originally bred by Oregon State University plant breeder Dr. Jim Bagget, this improved line has thicker walls and is higher yielding than the original. These improvements are the result of several decades of work by Dr. Bagget’s student, Mike Hessel of Red Hat Melons in Shedd, Oregon. Mike generously shared some of his stock seed with us and we are happy to take on stewardship of this classic Oregon variety. We thank Nichols Garden Nursery for their collaboration with Mike in introducing this variety to the seed trade and keeping it available. - [Radicchio, La Rosa del Veneto (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/chicory-radicchio/radicchio-la-rosa-del-veneto-organic/): La Rosa Del Veneto is a pink leafed chicory of the type that has been “having a moment” since at least 2018. We’re hoping that moment is here to stay and that pink chicory will establish itself as more than a niche crop for fancy chefs and foodies! Bright, cheery pink color variations make La Rosa del Veneto a great addition to mixed chicory salads or other greens mixes. Said to be less bitter than other chicories, and we’ve found it to be quite delicious and versatile in the kitchen. Pink chicories are best enjoyed raw because their color becomes muted with cooking. Plants start out with a light pink blush on green leaves and the pink really pops against bright white midribs once the cold weather sets in (think late November). Best planted mid-summer for harvest late autumn through early spring as the flavor and color are best in cool weather. Early season harvests yield open rosette-type heads, later in the season plants form elongated heads similar in shape to Treviso chicories. Very cold hardy and easily survives winter in our zone 8b garden (low to 15˚F) if the critters don’t get to it. - [Flour Corn, Purple Mountains (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/corn/flour-corn-purple-mountains-organic/): The stunning lavender-purple kernels of Purple Mountains Corn are held on 7-9” long, mostly 8 row cobs. Short 4-5' plants are very early to mature and are surprisingly high yielding for such small plants. We have selected this corn for several seasons after crossing some Mandan Parching Lavender corn into Montana Lavender corn. Montana Lavender was bred by Ed Schultz of Montana, which shares many traits with the renowned Painted Mountain Corn. Our goal is to develop an excellent corn for pozole and masa, while preserving its ability to be a great parching corn. We have been selecting for robust flavor and a uniform purple color without any flinty kernels. With its flour type kernels, Purple Mountains is perfect for making corn bread. If you like Mandan Parching Lavender corn then Purple Mountains should be a good improvement, as it better resists soil-borne diseases such as fusarium. Purple Mountains is a reference to the final musical project of the late great David Berman. - [Pumpkin, Emerald Naked Seeded (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/pumpkins/pumpkin-emerald-naked-seeded-organic/): Hulless pumpkin seeds (aka, pepitas) are some of the tastiest and most nutritious treats that one can grow in the garden or farm field. They are mind bogglingly delicious when freshly roasted with a little salt. So why not grow your own with Emerald Naked Seeded pumpkin? Our friend Chris Homanics has been working with hulless pumpkins for years and has developed the most incredible genepool we could imagine: Little pumpkins, big pumpkins, green striped or all orange on the outside. Not all of the pumpkins will make good eatin’ (however some of them will) but that is not the goal. Emerald Naked Seeded pumpkin is an interbreeding population whose goal is to discover what is possible and provide tons of green naked pumpkin seed along the way. Hulless pumpkin seeds have traditionally been used in Mexico for mole sauces and in Austria for pumpkin seed oil. We love the toasted seeds in salads or simply as a snack dusted with salt and seasoning. Seeds are easy to scoop out of the fruit, then when rinsed and dried will store for a year long stash of snackin’ goodness. Pepitas are high in protein, essential fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals. The breeding work for this variety can be traced back to Ken Ettlinger’s (Long Island Seed Project) Little Green Seed and other Styrian type pumpkins. Chris received his original seed from Holly Dumont of California who had further selected Ken’s work. - [Persephone White Seed Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/persephone-white-seed-garlic-organic/): Persephone White is a farm production workhorse garlic variety named for Persephone Farm, where it has been grown near Lebanon, Oregon for over 30 years. Similar to other silverskins, Persephone White garlic finishes in the field on the late side and stores well through the new year into spring. Like other silverskins, it is usually more resistant to garlic rust than other garlic types. Persephone Farm started growing this strain in the early days of their farm and have selected for quality all along the way, resulting in larger cloves and beautiful, consistent, relatively symmetrical bulb shape. They received it as Late California White, which has become a generic term for many late maturing silverskin and artichoke type varieties. This type of garlic is popular with farmers for a good reason: Yields are very good and reliable. Great variety for braiding due to its attractive white bulb wrappers and long soft necks. Spicy and sulfurous flavor raw. Cooked flavor is rich and nutty, retaining a slight bite. - [Hadrut Seed Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/hadrut-seed-garlic-organic/): Hadrut seed garlic minimum bulb size is 1.75" diameter. Average 7-8 bulbs per pound, 6-8 cloves per bulb. - [“The New Farmer’s Almanac, Volume VI” by The Greenhorns](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/books/new-farmers-almanac-volume-vi/): By The Greenhorns. 2023. Paperback. 300 pages. Foreword by Severine Von Tscharner Fleming. - [Seed Collections, Dry Farm Adaptive (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/collections-mixes/collections/seed-collections-dry-farm-adaptive-organic/): We’re thrilled to offer this collection as part of our collaboration with the good folks at the Dry Farm Institute (DFI). DFI has supported ongoing variety trials in Western Oregon since their inception in 2019 to help identify dry farm-adapted crop varieties and increase awareness and availability of these varieties through collaboration with seed stewards and companies like us (Adaptive Seeds)! - [Sweet Pepper, Lesya (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-lesya-organic/): Lesya is a totally unique sweet pepper from Ukraine that caught our eye due to its cool, conical, almost heart-like shape. Fruit have 3”-4” wide rounded shoulders that taper to a point at the blossom end. The heart shape is a bit variable but is really apparent when the peppers are cut in half lengthwise. Sturdy, 2 ft tall plants are good producers of dense, thick-walled, very sweet peppers that ripen easily under outdoor conditions. Plants tend to ripen a lot of their satiny red fruit all at once. Yields a very high percentage of marketable fruit (read: peppers don’t develop issues during ripening) that holds quality both on and off the plant. Excellent for eating raw in salads (or as a snack!), roasting, or for use when making stuffed or marinated peppers. Lesya is a female Ukrainian name that is diminutive for Oleksandra. Lesya sweet pepper is named after a friend of the plant breeder Nadiya Filimonivna Bilous. It was selected on the Bilous homestead farm and permaculture center in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine. Our stock seed came to us via Croatia and we have spent a few years selecting it for more uniformity. - [Sweet Pepper, Peace Bell (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-peace-bell-organic/): Peace Bell is a big red bell pepper with that classic blocky bell shape and sweet, tasty fruit. We have been looking for a red bell pepper to add to our offerings for a very long time, but found that most open-pollinated varieties were too late maturing, with low yields and a high percentage of blemished fruit. Peace Bell bucks that trend with tall plants that are dense and loaded with fruit. Provides remarkably good yields in our outdoor growing conditions, and would probably do even better in a greenhouse. The large yields can be heavy for the plants, so we recommend staking or tying them up to help avoid broken branches. Good leaf cover reduces the ubiquitous sun-scald problems that can afflict many bell pepper varieties. In 2022 we had a difficult late wet spring and Peace Bell still came through to produce hundreds of pounds of beautiful, delicious peppers. Then we got lucky and experienced a late dry fall and found that Peace Bell continually ripens fruit all the way until frost - we harvested the last green bell peppers for Thanksgiving. Good flavor and culinary characteristics, whether used green or red. They are great stuffed, stir fried, and raw in salads. Bred over the last decade by Peace Seeds and Peace Seedlings in Corvallis, Oregon. - [Aster, Lady Coral Light Blue (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/aster-lady-coral-light-blue-organic/): If you saw these flowers blooming under the surface of an alien planet’s warm water sea, you might assume you were looking at a novel species of sea-anemone-coral hybrid. Alluring pale blue flowers seem to turn a shade of pink when the sunlight hits just right. Slightly inward-curling petals are Chrysanthemum-like and give a soft yet sturdy appearance to the blooms. Strong stems make great cut flowers. Once the second flush of flowers develops, the plants produce a whole-plant bouquet with dozens of blooms. Upright plants grow to about 2’ tall, making them the perfect size for growing in containers or as bedding plants. We originally sourced this special variety from UK company Seeds of Distinction and are thrilled to produce seed for North America. - [Zucchini, Goldini 2 (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/squash/summer-squash/zucchini-goldini-2-organic/): Folks have been asking us for Goldini Zucchini, a yellow zuke bred by Carol Deppe, since its release in 2016. New for 2023, we’re pleased to offer Goldini 2 - Carol’s improved line! Bred for and under organic conditions, Carol has achieved so much with this release. We have found Goldini 2 to be outstanding for both agronomic traits (earliness and vigor) and culinary use (whether prepared raw, cooked, or dried). Golden, slightly club-shaped fruit are good when eaten small like a traditional market zuke, but flavor and texture peak when fruit are larger. Carol recommends picking the fruit when they are closer to 1-2 lbs, and we can confirm that these larger fruit are excellent. One of the most interesting uses of this squash is for drying. As she wrote in her book The Resilient Gardener, Carol recommends slicing and drying the bigger 2-3 lb fruit for use throughout the year. This traditional preservation method was earlier described in the 1917 book, Buffalo Bird Woman’s Garden, but most modern varieties don’t lend themselves to this type of preparation. While the plants are mostly uniform, there are some variations in leaf shape and plant growth habit which Carol says keeps the line diverse and vigorous. Highly productive; our kitchen garden plant seemed unstoppable and gave us harvestable fruit almost daily. For a deep dive into Carol’s process for breeding Goldini (which began by crossing Gold Rush yellow zuke into Costata Romanesco), check out this page. - [Cucumber, Jin Yang #2 (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/cucumbers/cucumber-jin-yang-2-organic/): Dark green, long Chinese trellising type cucumbers average 10-12” long and have very few seeds. Early maturing, crisp texture and good flavor. We grow Jin Yang #2 cucumbers outdoors without a trellis and end up with perfectly good but curved cucumbers; for straight cukes we recommend trellising. Sourced from our friends at CommonWealth Seed Growers and we are excited to bring it back into commercial availability. Jin Yang has shown itself to be resistant to many foliar diseases. To quote CommonWealth Seed Growers: “This variety was the best yielding of hundreds of varieties in NC State’s Downy-Mildew-focused cucumber trial, and one of only two that did well ... without fungicides.” Edmund Frost, Of CommonWealth Seed Growers, told us that cucumber fruit yield is usually correlated with disease resistance in Virginia where he farms. Jin Yang #2 is another cool variety retrieved from the USDA GRIN repository. It arrived at GRIN via Shaanxi Sheng, China, in 1994. - [Hot Pepper, Sonora Anaheim (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-sonora-anaheim-organic/): Sonora Anaheim pepper is a large, slender, mild chile bred for processing into salsa, canned chile, and taco sauce. If you want to bring in big, heavy yields of mild chiles, this is the variety for you. Straight, smooth, tapered fruit are about 1.5" - 2” wide at the shoulders and average about 8” long. With their mild flavor, these Anaheim chiles are often roasted and used for chile rellenos. Heat increases a little as fruit ripens to red, but never gets very hot. Sonora Anaheim has been tested at a very low 300-600 Scoville Heat Units and sometimes it is hard to tell if there is any heat at all. Although the flesh is relatively thick, it dries very easily when picked and hung inside the house. - [Cardoon, Plein Blanc Inerme Blanco (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/greens/cardoon-plein-blanc-inerme-blanco-organic/): Related to the artichoke but grown instead for the leaf midribs (technically petioles) that are eaten after blanching. White, thornless leaf midribs grow tall and are extra thick. Vigorous upright growth results in partial self-blanching, giving Plein Blanc Inerme Blanco Cardoon a higher culinary value than more traditional varieties. Though perennial and much more cold hardy than artichokes, cardoons are often grown as an annual for production. Mature leaves are tied together and then wrapped with straw, burlap, or cardboard for three weeks. After harvest they are peeled then boiled for a unique culinary experience. The flavor is similar to artichoke if it’s done right, but can be bitter if not properly prepared. Interesting prehistoric looking plants have a wonderful ornamental-edible (Edimental) appeal. Plants can grow up to four feet wide, with leaves 4’ tall or more and flower stalks as tall as 8’. Their giant thistle-like appearance seems like they could have coexisted with dinosaurs. Purple flowers are a nice bonus and are usually covered in happy bumble bees. Plants may die back but reappear each spring. Plein Blanc Inerme Blanco Cardoon translates from French as something like “Full White Spineless”. We originally sourced seed for this variety from Graines Baumaux in France. - [Eggplant, Poamoho Dark Long (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/eggplant/eggplant-poamoho-dark-long-organic/): Long, slender Japanese style eggplant bred in Hawai’i for Bacterial Wilt resistance. Despite its tropical origins, Poamoho Dark Long Eggplant has been very productive in our outdoor Pacific Northwest growing conditions. Relatively tall plants produce the longest-fruited eggplants that we grow.  Many of the beautiful, shiny dark-purple fruits grow to over 12” long. Tender skin that does not need to be peeled makes it quick in the kitchen and especially good for stir-fry. Named after the Poamoho Research Station where much of the variety evaluation was done. It was bred by Dr. Kenneth Takeda of the University of Hawaiˋi at Mānoa, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). - [Melon, Charentais Superprécoce Du Roc (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/melons/melon-charentais-superprecoce-du-roc-organic/): Green striped fruit have a heavenly aroma and deliciously sweet, firm orange flesh. Charentais is a traditional French type of cantaloupe that has long been considered by many to be the best of the best. Hybrid and open-pollinated Charentais melons tend to be a little slow to ripen in our climate, leaving us with a short, late-season harvest window. However, Charentais Superprécoce Du Roc is nice and quick to ripen. We noticed this variety was offered by seed company Graines Baumaux in France, and when we learned that “superprécoce” translates from French as “super early”, we couldn’t resist trialing it. “Superprécoce” may be a slight exaggeration, but an extra week or two of melon season is always a plus. Graines Baumaux recommends pruning plants to 3-4 fruit for larger, more flavorful melons, but we are pleased with the results of leaving them to their own devices, even if that means the fruit are on the small side. Finding the optimal harvest time is a bit of a learning curve (hint: it’s earlier than you think! - while the skin is still quite green). We cut the fruit from the vine after the tendril closest to the fruit dries out and turns brown. This is before the stem slips from the fruit and when the green skin just starts to lighten with a hint of yellow. The flavor when picked at perfect ripeness is unmatched. - [Monarda, Lemon Bergamot (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/monarda-lemon-bergamot-organic/): Lemon Bergamot Monarda achieves the garden trifecta of being an ornamental, culinary/medicinal, and insectary plant. Tubular purple flowers form in clusters around the stem, with two to six clusters along each stem. Perhaps most well known as an herbal flavoring for tea, leaves have a citrusy aroma and flavor with notes of oregano. Leaves make an excellent flavoring for stews, seafood and roasted meats. Lemon Bergamot also has a long history of medicinal usage to treat colds. Pollinators of all types including hummingbirds and butterflies flock to the flowers. Blooms over a long season from May to September making it a great addition to the annual flower garden. Good for use in cut or dried arrangements, as stems have good vase life and hold their form when dried. Deer and drought tolerant, may self seed. This member of the mint family is native to the southern US and northern Mexico. Aka, Lemon Beebalm, lemon mint, and purple horsemint. Not to be confused with Mondarda fistulosa, which is a perennial that also has Bee Balm as a common name. Lemon Bergamot is a low maintenance wildflower that grows 2.5’ tall by about 12” wide and does well in pots. - [Dent Corn, Strubbe’s Blue (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/corn/dent-corn-strubbes-blue-organic/): One of the most beautiful and uniquely colored corns we have seen, with single colored ears ranging from striking turquoise to bright blue to purple-blue kernels. Strubbe’s Blue Dent Corn is perfect for making your own blue tortilla masa or cornmeal for cornbread. Plants grow to about 7' tall and produce cobs that average about 8” long. Productive and delicious, yet it is worth growing for sheer ornamental value. Ernest Strubbe began breeding a rainbow of corn varieties on his farm in western Minnesota in 1929 and later was an early member of the Seed Savers Exchange (SSE). By the 1970s, he had developed a wide color palette of unique corn lines. In an interview with SSE in 1982, he declared that the Blue Dent was “really the prettiest one in the whole bunch to my eye,” and went on to describe how it appeared in his Green Dent line in the early 1950s. He continued, “By no near means do I consider any of them a finished variety. But they are to the point now that if you plant blue seed you will get all blue, but you may get some slightly different shadings of blue. I just wish I had 20 years more to work on them.” USDA GRIN acquired Strubbe’s Blue corn in 1977. Our friend, self-described corn nut, and OSU plant breeder Lucas Nebert retrieved it from GRIN in 2021 (as ES Blue) and shared some with us in 2022. We’re so glad he did, as this corn was an instant favorite on our farm and it is also one of the best yielding corn varieties we have grown. - [10 Adaptive Seeds Tri-fold Brochures](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/seed-rack-misc/10-adaptive-seed-information-handout/): Add some Adaptive Seeds Trifolds to your display! Includes information about the background and mission of Adaptive Seeds. This sticker is 2” round with a white background and green and purple design. Outdoor quality vinyl stickers are UV protected and have permanent adhesive. Approximately 25 stickers. - [Bangkok Seed Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/bangkok-seed-garlic-organic/): Bangkok seed garlic minimum bulb size is 2 inches wide. Averages 7-8 bulbs per pound, 8-9 cloves per bulb. - [Toothache Plant / Spilanthes (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/toothache-plant-spilanthes-organic/): The common name Toothache Plant refers to the numbing and tingling sensation caused by chewing on the leaves or flowers of these fun and pretty plants. You'll never forget your first time with this one - it's like Jimi Hendrix playing his fuzz face guitar pedal too loud, but it's in your mouth, and you don't know what's happening. But that tingling is not just for fun - spilanthes is widely used to treat toothaches, gum infections, and sore throat, and to stimulate salivation. Analgesic, antiseptic, antiviral, anti-bacterial and immune-stimulating properties include the same compound that is in echinacea and are well-documented, though in large doses it may be harmful. Low-growing plants grow to 12-15", sport attractive bronze-green foliage with yellow and red button-like (or antennae, or eyeball) flowers and are suitable for container culture. Native to Brazil, but commonly cultivated world-wide. In addition to traditional medicinal uses in South and Central America, it is also part of the pharmacopeia of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and western folk herbalism. Aka, eyeball plant, jambu, electric daisy, paracress, buzz buttons, Schezuan buttons. - [Hot Pepper, Sugar Rush Peach (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-sugar-rush-peach-organic/): Don't let the name fool you - Sugar Rush Peach packs a hot pepper punch! Yellow fruit grow to about 3" long and ripen to a lovely peachy orange color. Definitely a very hot pepper but does have some sweetness with almost tropical fruit undertones. Sugar Rush Peach has quite a following and it's easy to appreciate why with its unique color and flavor combination not found in other peppers. Ripens early for a C. baccatum pepper and produces well even in cool growing conditions. A delicious modern selection bred by Chris Fowler in Wales, UK. - [Beet, Forono (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beets/beet-forono-organic/): Forono is Elanor's favorite beet. Why? "Given enough space and time, the roots can grow as large as those on the right without giving up any flavor or tenderness. If you prefer a more manageable size, start harvesting a little earlier, selectively, and you can still get some hefty beets like those in the middle. Or start earlier yet and get the smaller (but very respectable) roots on the left. Forono has all the earthy flavor you love in a beet, with lots of sweetness. It is wonderful grated fresh onto a salad or in a slaw, but when cooked it has a smooth, velvety texture unlike any other. Its shape allows for easy prep in the kitchen, especially for pickling and canning. Forono's greens are tasteful but modest for easy bundling and packing. Forono performs fine in summer but excels for fall harvests (direct seeded once in mid-June then once more in mid-July). Make sure to pull all the roots you want for winter out of the field before temperatures drop below 20˚F. They keep well for 6 months refrigerated." - [Hot Pepper, Vallero (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-vallero-organic/): Just one look and hot pepper fans will know Vallero peppers are delicious. Chocolate-brown color is indicative of a rich flavor that has a hint of sweetness and earthy undertones. Fruit grow to 1.5" wide and 6" long, and are good for roasting when green. Shape and size resemble New Mexico chiles and they are similarly medium-hot, making them very versatile. After ripening, they are a great for use in sauces and salsas, and they dry easily for flakes or powder. This variety is from Buenaventura in Chihuahua, Mexico, where it is said to be used in chile colorado. - [Belgian Endive, Demi-Hâtive de Malines (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/chicory-radicchio/belgian-endive-demi-hative-de-malines-organic/): Delicious Belgian / Witloof type endive, that can easily be forced in simple production conditions. Belgian endives are grown during the main season (direct sown in June). Roots are then dug in early fall and forced in darkness (either in soil, in a cellar, or under the kitchen sink) throughout winter to harvest the characteristic dense, elongated, blanched heads. Demi-Hâtive de Malines translates to "Half Early from Malines" and is a traditional, open pollinated variety that was selected for this purpose in the Malines (aka Mechelen) area of Belgium. The industry has transitioned to hybrids, and open pollinated varieties like this one have become very hard to find. Our foundation seed came from a seed smuggling friend who sourced it from a French seed company. For more growing details see the 'Growing and Seed Saving' tab below. - [Radicchio, Palla Rossa Melot (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/chicory-radicchio/radicchio-palla-rossa-melot-organic/): After extensive trialing, Palla Rossa Melot is the best open pollinated classic Palla Rossa radicchio we have found. Large, dense round heads of bright red and white leaves have a mild flavor and make a festive addition to the plate. Quicker to head up than many other varieties means you can plant a bit late and still have good results. Best for early fall through early winter harvest. Other sources indicate this variety is not winter hardy but we have found the opposite to be true - heads overwinter in our field just fine with lows around 25˚F. Even after several deep freezes, once the outer leaves are removed, the inner leaves remain well-protected. Just make sure to eat them before the voles do. This selection is originally from Italian seed company, Franchi Seeds, and we are continuing to select it for good head formation and consistent red and white coloration. - [Tomato, Minusinsk Lion (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-minusinsk-lion-organic/): Another great Siberian tomato, Minusinsk Lion holds the perfect balance of giant fruit size and early ripening. These large red slicing tomatoes are definitely a surprise as we have seldom seen a tomato variety that produces so much so fast. Minusinsk Lion is not as early as a lot of excellent tomatoes out there, but its earliness is quite impressive relative to its size and productivity in our outdoor growing conditions. Classic tomato flavor is rich and sweetly balanced. Fruit average 1 lb and occasionally get much bigger. They slice up perfectly for the ultimate sandwich tomato, and are resistant to blossom end rot. Variety namesake is Minusinsk, which according to Wikipedia, was an "intellectual haven for those anti-tsarist political activists and revolutionaries who had been exiled from European Russia in the 1880s." Nowadays, there is an annual "Tomato Day" festival held in Minusinsk, where a contest is held to crown the "Minusinsky Champion," the largest tomato of the year. Thank you to Croatian Seeds Store for turning us on to these great tomatoes. Aka, Minusinskiy Lev. - [Sorghum, Jalisco Sugar Cane (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/sorghum-jalisco-sugar-cane-organic/): As the name suggests, Jalisco Sugar Cane is the type of sorghum used for pressing to make sorghum molasses / sorgo / sorghum syrup. We have not tried to make it ourselves but the syrup is delicious and the stems sure are sweet to chew on! Produces well in our climate and is the first sugar sorghum variety we have found to mature seed before frost. Plants grow to 8' tall and are drought tolerant. This type of sorghum can also be grown as a fodder crop and produces high biomass for compost or cover cropping. It is also sometimes used to produce alcohol and fuel ethanol. Tall canes are topped with clusters of black seed; grains are tightly hulled and not ideal for eating. This special sorghum was given to us by a student during a farm tour with a local school garden club. It was labeled "sugar cane" and was brought by his parents from Jalisco, Mexico. - [Zinnia, Old Mexico (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/zinnia-old-mexico-organic/): Old Mexico zinnia has a delightful range of single to double, mostly bicolor red and dark orange flowers with golden to yellow tips. Dense, compact plants are a magnet to beneficial insects providing shelter and forage for many garden friends, especially when planted en masse. Plants grow to 18" tall and bloom until frost. They look great all season long. Blooms are long lasting and stems are sturdy but on the short side, would make a good addition for small bouquets. An old-fashioned classic All-America Selections winner from 1962. Z. haageana is also known as Mexican zinnia. - [Thyme, Varico 2 (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/thyme-varico-2-organic/): A modern selection of English/German/Winter Thyme that is highly aromatic and productive compared with common thyme. Thyme is important in many culinary traditions both fresh and dried. It is a frequent component of za'atar, Italian seasoning blends, herbs de Provence, and bouquet garni. Varico 2 Thyme has medicinal uses as well, with high thymol content which is a compound noted for its antiseptic qualities. Sprawling evergreen plants grow to about 12" tall and are well-suited for growing in the herb garden, containers, rock gardens or even as ground covers. Pretty white flowers are attractive to beneficial insects. Native to the Mediterranean region, it is both drought tolerant and extremely cold-hardy. "Varico" means vein. Originally listed as a hybrid but we have saved seed for several generations and it appears uniform. - [Marigold, Ildkongen (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/marigold-ildkongen-organic/): We have been growing this stunning heritage marigold since 2007 and are excited to have enough harvested and cleaned to share. Ildkongen is not your average marigold. While other marigolds are short, Ildkongen forms tall bushy plants that grow to 4' and produce lots of flowers right up until frost. Bloom color ranges from fiery red to dark orange and yellow mottled-orange on the same plant depending on the age of plant and/or temperatures. Color can transform slowly over the course of the season, in our garden early flowers are more dark red, later flowers are paler. This boisterous, assertive plant is aptly named - Ildkongen is Danish for Fire King. A Seed Ambassadors Project variety that is common in Denmark and was given to us by our friends at Frøosamlerne, the Danish seed saving organization. - [Lion’s Ear, Klip Dagga / Cordao (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/lions-ear-klip-dagga-cordao-organic/): Delightfully unique tubular orange flowers appear on spiky pincushion-like spheres that form at intervals up stems. Klip Dagga is very easy to grow and absolutely stunning in late summer waving in the breeze. Plants grow 8-12' tall and may require staking late in the season and in high wind areas. All parts of the plant, especially flower petals, have wide ranging medicinal uses and are said to have a mild calming and euphoric effect. Hummingbirds have turf wars over this plant, perhaps because they use it medicinally, too. Regardless of their motivation, we highly recommend Klip Dagga for planting where you can watch the hummingbirds go wild for this plant. The pincushion flower bracts are difficult to handle but fun to look at and are interesting in dried flower arrangements. Related to Lion's Tail/Wild Dagga, but easier to grow and more productive. May self-sow. Native to Southern Africa where it is called Cordao. Aka, Devil's Pincushion. - [Heliopsis, Burning Hearts (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/heliopsis-burning-hearts-organic/): Fiery yellow 2-3" daisy-like flowers with red centers sit atop dark purple foliage. When planted in blocks, Burning Hearts creates a sizable and beautiful seasonal hedge that dies back in the winter. A reliable perennial that grows to 4.5' tall and 18" wide. Pollinators, butterflies, and other beneficial insects are attracted to the flowers and once they're done, birds enjoy feasting on the seeds. Good cut flower that blooms prolifically from June through October. Easy to grow in a wide range of soils, relatively drought tolerant once established, and resistant to deer and rabbits. This species is native to eastern and central North America. Aka, false sunflower, rough oxeye, smooth oxeye. - [Celosia, Magenta Forest Fire (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/celosia-magenta-forest-fire-organic/): Deep magenta flame-like flower spikes are dynamic in the garden and make a nice addition to landscaping and mixed containers. Dark red-bronze leaves complement the flower heads to provide color contrast and texture all season long. Magenta Forest Fire's vibrant color, strong stems, and abundant side shoots make it a great cutting variety for both fresh and dried bouquets. Easy to grow tender annual that loves the heat. We have selected this new variety from the classic Forest Fire (a bright-red variety) to bring out darker, more intense color tones. - [Eggplant, Petch Siam (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/eggplant/eggplant-petch-siam-organic/): Small, round, green striped eggplants are the type most commonly used in Thai cuisine. In fact, Petch Siam translates to 'Diamond of Thailand.' Fruit grow to 2.5 - 3", the approximate size of a tennis ball, but are best harvested at 1.5-2", closer to the size of a ping pong ball. We recommend quartering the fruit and cooking them lightly in coconut curry – they absorb the complex flavors and are absolutely delicious. Similar types of eggplant are also popular in Vietnam and India. We have been selecting Petch Siam eggplant for several years with each generation resulting in more reliable fruit yield, uniformity, earliness and productivity in our climate. - [Tomato, Rosita Brandywine Cherry (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-brandywine-cherry-organic/): Large round pink cherry tomato packed with the flavor of the eponymous sweet slicing tomato, but with none of the production problems of the famous heirloom. Rosita Brandywine Cherry tomato produces short determinate plants that are easy to grow and loaded with deliciously sweet and juicy bite-sized fruit. Collaboratively bred in California by Kanti Rawal and Steve Peters. Selected from a cross with its namesake heirloom, with the goal of becoming an 'Heirloom of Tomorrow'. Disease resistant plants are small enough that they may not need to be trellised (but it wouldn't hurt, either) and can be grown in containers. - [Jupiter Seed Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/jupiter-seed-garlic-organic/): Jupiter Seed Garlic minimum bulb size is 1.75" diameter. Average 6-8 bulbs per pound, 4-6 cloves per bulb. - [Tomato, Justyna (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-justyna-organic/): In our 2018 tomato trial, this orange tomato surprised us with its sweet flavor, which enthusiastically earned it a spot in our catalog. Justyna is a great multipurpose tomato, excellent in salads, salsas and sauces. 2-3" tall, plum shaped, 1-2 oz fruit are bright orange with a little pointy tail on the blossom end. Plants have a wispy growth habit that reaches about 3' tall. Selected and stabilized by Tatiana Kouchnareva, of Tatiana's TOMATObase fame, from a cross made by Tom Wagner between Mountain Rose paste tomato and an F2 of Sun Sugar cherry tomato. Named after Justyna Kowalczyk, a well-known Polish cross-country skier. - [Tomato, Flaming Burst (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-flaming-burst-organic/): Small, golden orange, mini-pear cherry tomato with a flavor that will have you coming back for more. Sweet and tangy with a firm texture, Flaming Burst offers vast taste and texture improvements over the standard Yellow Pear. The 1 oz fruit are split resistant, making them a great choice for market growers. High yielding plants are short indeterminates that grow to a manageable 4' tall. Bred by Tom Wagner, selected from a cross with the famed Jaune Flamme variety from which it shares many traits, including color and sweetness. Sure to become a Pacific Northwest classic. - [Cosmos, Kenikir (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/cosmos-kenikir-organic/): Bright yellow, 2-3" wide flowers are like little stars in the garden. Can quickly grow into a hedge covered in yellow blooms, which the bees love. Bushy plants grow to 4’ wide and tall, and bloom all season long in the Pacific Northwest. In other latitudes, or when planted mid summer, Kenikir cosmos can grow to greater heights and flower later due to their unique day length sensitivity. - [Hyssop, True (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/hyssop-true-organic/): Easy to grow, True Hyssop is a useful ornamental herb that easily fits in a perennial or medicinal herb garden. Small (12-18”), evergreen, drought resistant plants would make a good short hedge and do well in containers. Plants will flower in the first year and in subsequent seasons, will bloom over a longer period of time. Hummingbirds, bees, and other beneficial insects love the pretty purple-blue flower spikes and according to Mother Earth Living, “Legend has it that beekeepers rubbed their hives with hyssop and other herbs to encourage bees to stay.” With its pleasantly fresh, sweetly bitter, and almost minty fragrance, True Hyssop is also a culinary herb and can be used medicinally in tea as a remedy for coughs and colds. Native to southern and eastern Europe. - [Sage, Extrakta (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/sage-extrakta-organic/): This improved strain of common/garden sage has a high essential oil content making it excellent for culinary and medicinal use. Fast and easy to grow from seed. We especially love to fry up fresh leaves until they're crispy and serve them with pork chops. We also use Extrakta Sage leaves to flavor beans, pasta sauce, and turkey stuffing. Both silver-green foliage and dark purple flowers are edible, and leaves retain their flavor when dried. Can be used in aromatherapy and herbal smoking blends. Highly aromatic, deer resistant, and drought tolerant. Flowers also attract pollinators. Native to the Mediterranean region with documented medicinal uses going back to ancient Greece. - [Sweet Pepper, Gernika (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-gernika-organic/): Mild flavored sweet peppers originally from the Basque region of Spain. The 6" long, ripe red fruit start to crinkle a little on the plant when mature. We first started growing Gernika when we were searching for an excellent drying pepper for sweet paprika, and they are now our favorite for that purpose. They dry easily and the paprika is deeply flavorful. It wasn’t until we dug deeper that we found another wonderful culinary use: Gernika is famously good when green, fried up in olive oil or grilled with a little salt, much like Padrón peppers. When ripe and red they are used much like Espelette peppers. While not exclusive to the town of Gernika, they are grown throughout the region and can be found at farmers markets. We sourced our original seed from Casey O’Leary of Snake River Seed Cooperative in Idaho. She was given the seed by Lino Zabal, a Basque gardener living in Boise, Idaho, who had been growing them for over 40 years. Aka, Gernikako Piperrak, Guernica. - [Sweet Pepper, Amish Yellow Stuffing (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-amish-yellow-stuffing-organic/): Bright yellow-orange mini bell peppers grow to about 2" across. The high yielding plants pump out sweet and tasty, fun-sized fruit. The size makes them very versatile – perfect for snacking or adding to salads, pickling whole, or stuffed as an appetizer. Plants have a small stature that make them well suited for container gardening. Seed given to us by Ann Berblinger of Gales Meadow farm, who noticed their care-free productivity here in Oregon. Originally sold by Amishland Seeds who sourced them from a local farm in the village of Landis Valley near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Aka, Sweet Yellow Stuffing. - [Lettuce, Bijella (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/lettuce/lettuce-bijella-organic/): Curly, red-tipped, green oak leaf lettuce produces compact, denser heads than many other oak leaf varieties, making it ideal for market displays. Quick and easy to chop or tear into a delicious salad with the perfect loft. Suitable for baby leaf production. Sweet and aromatic flavor is best when harvested in spring or autumn, and also does well in moderately hot summers. Leaves have a buttery smoothness with a nice light crispness creating a balanced texture. Very slow to bolt. Disease resistant, partly due to its upright growth habit. A clear winner in our variety trials. Developed by plant breeder Thomas Heinze of the Kultursaat biodynamic plant breeding initiative in Germany. Our original seed stock came from Bingenheimer Saatgut in Germany. - [Corn Salad, Piedmont (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/greens/corn-salad-piedmont-organic/): Winter hardy, yet tender and mild flavored salad green that has a nice subtle hint of nuttiness with a floral perfume. Plants form a small rosette of strap-shaped, light-green, 4" leaves. Usually grown autumn through spring, the very hardy plants easily overwinter in our field. Piedmont is a large seeded, larger leaved corn salad that is said to be more warm weather tolerant than other varieties. Once a commonly available variety but now seems to have disappeared from the trade. Self sows when allowed to set seed. Aka Mâche, Lamb’s Lettuce. - [Chard, Bietola a Costa Fine (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/chard/chard-bietola-a-costa-fine-organic/): Traditional Tuscan-type, green leaf chard often simply called Bietola. The sweetest chard we have ever tried. Young leaves have little to no oxalic acid flavor at all. Older leaves have more standard chard flavor, yet are still uniquely mild and tasty. Leaves tend to be smaller with thinner midribs than more modern chard varieties. Bietola a Costa Fine is somewhere between a giant spinach and a small Swiss Chard leaf. A type of bunching green Eliot Colman called “Butter Chard” is his Winter Harvest Handbook. Excellent grown as a winter vegetable crop in an unheated greenhouse, often yielding a burst of bounty in the spring. After overwintering in Italy, in the late-spring of the second season, the roots were traditionally processed into sugar. A heritage variety from Agricultori Custodi, a seed preservation group in Tuscany, Italy. - [Carrot, Danvers 126 (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/carrots/carrot-danvers-126-organic/): With its broad-shouldered, conical, orange roots, Danvers 126 carrot is a garden standby that has been around since 1886. Similar to Red Core Chantenay but less blocky and a little more tender, however not as tender as Nantes types. Good for year round carrot production. Split resistant roots grow to about 7” and store well both in the field (if the field mice don’t get them) or the root cellar. A good option for heavier soils, too. A favorite among organic farmers because of its sweet flavor, general hardiness, and vigorous and strong tops that compete well with weeds. Danvers was originally developed by market farmers in the 1870s in Massachusetts, Danvers 126 is an improved strain developed in the 1940s. Aka, Danvers Half Long. - [Carrot, Coral (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/carrots/carrot-coral-organic/): An early improved Nantes type carrot. Unique orange color has almost pinkish undertones. Flavor is what really makes Coral a standout with its delicious sweetness and an aroma to match – perfect for snacking. Coreless, with better tip fill than most OP carrots. European variety introduced to the US by Fedco Seeds in Maine. Coral carrot was recommended to us by our good friend Carolina who farmed at the Oregon Coast – the same friend who turned us on to Piracicaba broccoli. When Carolina tells us a variety is worth growing, we listen! When searching for a replacement for a farm favorite hybrid that had been discontinued, she discovered Coral and preferred its flavor in her trials. Best harvested promptly – roots may split if left in the ground too long. - [Long Bow Red Shallot Seed (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/long-bow-red-shallot-seed-organic/): Long Bow Red Shallot is a big, copper skinned shallot with purple-red flesh. Classic French type shallot with a more elongated shape when compared to most other varieties. While not as large as the similarly shaped Zebrune shallot or Cuisse de Poulet du Poitou, these are traditional shallots that are vegetatively propagated and not grown from true seed. The flavor is sharp and bright when raw, and richly complex when sautéed. Perfect for salad dressing, fried shallots, or any classic shallot recipe. Storage life is moderately long, lasting quite a while into the winter season. - [Polish White Seed Garlic (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/garlic-shallots/polish-white-seed-garlic-organic/): Polish White seed garlic minimum bulb size is 1.75" diameter (most are over 2"). Average 4-6 bulbs per pound, 6-8 cloves per bulb. - [“Farming While Black” by Leah Penniman](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/books/farming-while-black-by-leah-penniman/): By Leah Penniman. 2018. 368 pages. - [Sorghum, M61 Perennial (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/sorghum-m61-perennial-organic/): We received this beautiful grain from our friend Tim Peters back in 2005 when we drove around the back roads of Douglas County, Oregon collecting samples from his guerrilla perennial grain breeding projects. We saw many perennialized clumps growing back year after year and were intrigued. Although we have succeeded growing M61 Perennial as an annual, we have struggled to produce it as a true perennial. However, we know it is possible under the right conditions, because our friend Nate Kleinman of the Experimental Farm Network has successfully grown this variety as a perennial in New Jersey. M61 Perennial Sorghum is believed to have been selected from an interspecific hybrid between Sorghum bicolor and Sorghum halepense. Some plants have plump, light-orange, easy to thresh grain, while others have a more tightly clasping glume and may be optimally used for cover crop and/or compost biomass production. Sorghum originated in Africa and typically has been produced as an annual. As a grain it is one of the most important food crops on the planet. We are very grateful to be able to pass this experimental grain with permaculture potential on to others. Please let us know how it grows for you. - [Millet, Dragon’s Claw (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/millet-dragons-claw-organic/): Aptly named, Dragon’s Claw is a unique and fun millet with panicles that are shaped like a hand with up to eight fingers pointed up to the sky. Would make a neat addition to autumn bouquets. The birds in our field left this one alone, preferring pretty much every other crop, which is surprising because the seed smells delicious like malted barley. Since it is a new crop for us here, maybe the birds haven't figured it out yet. Short for a millet, plants grow to 18”. Originated as a food crop in the Ethiopian and Ugandan highlands, although now grown all over the world. Finger Millet is especially valued in dry hot climates where it is ground into flour and made into cakes, porridge and fermented into beer. As with all millets, it is difficult to hull so is most often milled into flower. Aka, Ragi, African Finger Millet. - [Zinnia, Aztec Burgundy Bicolor (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/zinnia-aztec-burgundy-bicolor-organic/): Charming miniature zinnias in a range of burgundy shades with yellow and white accents are beautiful both in the garden and in short bouquets. Small plants grow to 18” and are great for bedding or containers. Attractive to pollinators with 1.5” double blooms that keep going right up until frost. Z. haageana is also known as Mexican zinnia. - [Winged Everlasting (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/winged-everlasting-organic/): Perhaps one of the best and most well known dried flowers, Winged Everlasting (aka, Ammobium), is also a good filler in fresh arrangements. Tiny white strawflower like blossoms sit atop sturdy stems, and can be cut before they fully open for all white flowers, or after they open and yellow centers appear. An abundance of stems that average 6-12 flowers make these small plants very high yielding. Native to Australia and in the seed trade since at least the 1880s. - [Sweet William, Hollandia Purple Crown Mix (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sweet-william-hollandia-purple-crown-mix-organic/): This Dianthus / Sweet William is an annual cut flower version of the cottage garden favorite. So many Sweet Williams are biennial and it is difficult to wait for the blooms. The 2' tall plants of Hollandia Purple Crown Mix display many of the classic Dianthus colors – red, purple, white, pink and bicolor combinations abound. Blooms stand tall on strong stems and have a sweet smell. A favorite for their long vase life. Petals are edible and make a nice addition to salad. - [Sweet Pea, Blue Celeste (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sweet-pea-blue-celeste-organic/): The Blue Celeste Sweet Pea patch is one of my favorite spots in the field or garden in early summer. Loads of sky blue flowers with a faint purple hue are almost luminescent, and the classic sweet pea scent seems to call out and remind me to take a few minutes to enjoy a moment here and there. Plants grow to 4’ tall and stems are nice and long for cut flowers. Earlier than most other sweet peas and continues to bloom even after summer heats up. By far the best sweet pea of our trials in 2019, and the only one to be added to our offerings. - [Snapdragon, Orange Wonder (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/snapdragon-orange-wonder-organic/): A stunning example of that magical orange-peach flower color that appears to glow like an eye candy sunset. We love this quality of color wherever we can find it, and Orange Wonder snapdragon is so spectacular that everyone who saw it in our field stopped in their tracks to admire it. A great cut flower, stems will continue to bloom until frost. Unique variety that grows to 3' tall and benefits from support. Deer resistant. - [Rudbeckia, Prairie Glow (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/rudbeckia-prairie-glow-organic/): A tall coneflower / brown eyed Susan with a wild character. Prairie Glow’s small, 2” red flowers with yellow tips perform well as a cut flower both fresh and dried. Bushy plants reach 4’ tall and produce many stems with a purple tint. Feeds birds, bees, and butterflies, but not the deer. This species is native to the prairie states of the US. Self-sows. - [Poppy, Purple Frilly English (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/poppy-purple-frilly-english-organic/): Compact plants with lots of frilly bright-purple poppies. Degree of frills seems to be related to growing conditions as plants can form both super-frill and not-so-frill flowers. The unique frilliness provides a fairly open flower that bees and other beneficial insects love to visit. Collected by The Seed Ambassadors Project at the Seedy Sunday Seed Swap in Brighton, England. - [Monarda, Wild Bergamot / Bee Balm (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/monarda-wild-bergamot-bee-balm-organic/): The name Bee Balm says it all. Bees, butterflies, other beneficial insects, even hummingbirds love to come and drink the nectar of this member of the mint family. We saw a large number of native bumble bees foraging among the summer blooms. Steal a few flowering stems from the bees for a mellow hued pink cut flower, or use the edible, tubular flowers as an addition to salads or sprinkled on top of any dish as a light minty garnish. Blooms the second year after sowing. Grows 3-4' tall. Wild Bergamot leaves and flowers have some nice medicinal uses and make a nice tea. A native North American wildflower found mostly east of the Rocky Mountains. Said to grow best in dry alkaline soil, but we have found it likes our moderately acidic Oregon clay-loam just fine. - [Marigold, Tangerine Gem (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/marigold-tangerine-gem-organic/): Tiny, orange, edible, marigold flowers form on dwarf plants that do well in containers. A cheerful little bedding plant, looks great when planted densely. Blooms all summer long right up until frost, and is highly attractive to pollinators and other beneficial insects. Lovely citrusy scent is fun to experiment with in the kitchen, although flavor is on the spicy side, or simply use leaves or petals as a garnish. Signet type. - [Feverfew, White Wonder (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/feverfew-white-wonder-organic/): Clusters of double, ½" daisy-like flowers with yellow centers form on each stem and make an excellent filler for arrangements or a nice bouquet all on their own. Plants grow to 2' high and are very productive. Also dries well for use as an everlasting. Very easy to grow and tolerant of poor growing conditions. Much less fragrant and likely less medicinal than our single-flowered Medicinal Feverfew, which is the same species. Not attractive to pollinators. Aka, Matricaria, Chrysanthemum parthenium and Pyrethrum parthenium. - [Chinese Lantern (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/chinese-lantern-organic/): A decorative relative of tomatillos and ground cherries, Chinese Lantern has a dark orange papery wrapper that surrounds inconsequential fruit. A festive addition to autumn-themed arrangements and also great for everlasting bouquets since the color remains vibrant after drying. Plants grow to 2’ tall, with cutting stems to 12” long. Self-sows and slowly spreads via rhizomes – container culture is recommended. Used medicinally as a poultice, but otherwise toxic. Aka, Japanese Lantern, Winter Lantern, Winter Cherry. - [Celosia, Flamingo Feather (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/celosia-flamingo-feather-organic/): Feathery silver/white flower spikes develop into a light pink that gets darker towards the tips. Soft texture begs to be touched and looks phenomenal in arrangements. A wheatstraw type, Flamingo Feather Celosia plants grow to 4’ tall producing many branches (up to 40!), each with a flower spike at the end. Spikes may be picked early when they are small, or if they remain on the plant they'll just keep getting bigger until the end of the season. Dries well, too. Winner of a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit. - [California Poppy, Copper Pot (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/california-poppy-copper-pot-organic/): A unique strain of California Poppy with satiny petals that are mostly dark red on the bottoms and deep dark orange on the tops. Since flowers open and close with the sun, the flower color appears to change from red in the early mornings to coppery by day then back to red in the evening. Blossoms sit atop feathery silver foliage. Best if direct sown in autumn or very early spring for flowers that start early and go until the heat of summer. We selected hard for dark red flowers but the occasional lighter colors (even white!) may appear. Will self-sow. - [Calendula, Bronzed Beauty (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/calendula-bronzed-beauty-organic/): Pale peach with some copper undertones, Bronzed Beauty Calendula offers a unique coloration when compared to the standard orange and yellow calendula color spectrum. Petals are cream on the top and coppery red on the back. Flower center is a nice chocolate brown. This variety is great for people who want some of the medicinal qualities of calendula but prefer a more muted flower palette. Flowers are a little smaller than most calendulas, but have long stems and make a good cut flower. Plants grow to 18”. Flowers begin early and continue late into the season, especially if deadheaded. Deer resistant. Aka, Bronze Beauty. - [Bells of Ireland (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/bells-of-ireland-organic/): A garden classic that has been featured in bouquets since before green flowers were cool, Bells of Ireland has been cultivated since the 1500s! Highly branched plants produce many spires of lime green, bell-shaped “flowers” that grow to 18” to three feet tall. The actual flowers are tiny and white, and the green bells are the calyx. Lasts a long time in a vase and makes a surprisingly good dried flower, too. Green color fades when dried to a straw color. Represents luck. Native to Turkey, Syria, and the Caucasus. Germination may be slow and erratic. Aka, Shellflower. - [Balloon Flower, Florist Blue (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/balloon-flower-florist-blue-organic/): Developed for the cut flower trade, both the blue star-shaped flowers and balloon-shaped flower buds are intriguing in a vase as well as in the garden. Stems have up to ten blossoms each and last a long time in arrangements if seared at harvest. Does not bloom until second season, but will flower from midsummer through fall for many years. Grows well in full sun to part shade. Low maintenance and deer resistant. - [Ageratum, Dondo Blue (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/ageratum-dondo-blue-organic/): Tiny fuzzy purple flowers form in nice sized clusters on long stems making a great filler for bouquets. Long season makes it great for the garden, too! Many modern ageratums have been bred to be dwarf bedding plants, but Dondo Blue maintains the taller stature loved for cut flower production. Stems of Dondo Blue found their way into almost every weekly bouquet we made from midsummer through frost, adding nice texture and complementary color. Deer resistant. May self-sow. Aka, Floss Flower, Bluemink. - [Nigella, Black-Seeded Culinary (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/nigella-black-seeded-culinary-organic/): Attractive blue flowers look a lot like the related flower, Love-in-a-Mist, but Black-Seeded Culinary Nigella is a different species with closed seedpods that keep seeds safe inside. Plants grow 8-12” tall and while it does not produce many flowers, each flower is high yielding of small, aromatic black seeds that taste like nutmeg and black pepper. A great dual-purpose edible ornamental. This medicinal spice has been used for centuries in South Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines and was reportedly even found in the tomb of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. Aka, Black Cumin, Black Seed, Black Caraway, Fennel Flower, Charnushka, Kalonji, Roman Corriander. - [Motherwort (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/motherwort-organic/): Highly medicinal and intensely bitter perennial member of the mint family that grows to 3’ tall and produces small purple flowers in the second year. Motherwort’s flowering tops make a unique cut flower and its presence in the garden is also ornamental. Used medicinally across many herbal traditions for endocrine related issues, uterine health, cardiovascular function, anxiety, and more. We are attracted to its power as a heart calming herb. Tincture is made from the flowering tops, with stem removed, just as the first flowers open. Self-sows. Aka, lion's tail, throw-wort, lion’s ear. - [Feverfew, Medicinal (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/feverfew-medicinal-organic/): This short lived perennial medicinal herb produces shrubby plants that grow to 3’ with small, non-double white flowers with a yellow center. Plants are highly fragrant with bitter aromatics that are not universally appreciated and in fact repel some insects. For this reason, it is sometimes planted as a deterrent. As a cut flower this variety has more intense fragrance and less dense flower clusters than improved versions, such as White Wonder Feverfew. Leaves have been used medicinally for centuries in treating fevers, migraines, arthritis, stomach aches, and more. The US National Institutes of Health even acknowledges its “multifarious therapeutic uses,” including anticancer activity. - [Basil, Golden Mountain Sweet Thai Mix (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/basil-golden-mountain-sweet-thai-mix-organic/): An essential ingredient in many Thai dishes because of its classic sweet licorice clove flavor. Green leaves, purple stems and purple flowers form on compact plants that work well in containers. Received as a variable population, some plants are stout with larger, sweeter leaves that are less aromatic, while other plants are taller with smaller leaves that are highly fragrant and strongly flavored. We are selecting Golden Mountain Sweet Thai Mix to find a balance between the two, but in the meantime are happy with the diversity, finding the larger sweeter leaves best when used fresh as a garnish, and the smaller more strongly flavored leaves more well suited for cooking. This variety originally stems from a commercial seed packet from Thailand sent to us from Sarah’s dad, who lived there for over 20 years. It took a few years of selection, but we finally succeeded in getting enough plants to mature viable seed to be able to add it to our catalog. - [Tomato, Dwarf Confetti (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-dwarf-confetti-organic/): This tomato really knows how to party, and not just because of the name. Dwarf Confetti's striped skin is a festive addition to any garden or food dish, and the sweet flavor has a pizzaz that many older dwarf tomato varieties lack. Slightly flattened 6-8 oz globe fruit have yellow/pink bicolored flesh. High yielding plants benefit from a short cage or staking so they don't fall over. With over 100 tomatoes already in our catalog, it's rare that one gets instant approval from the whole Adaptive Seeds team, and Dwarf Confetti did just that. Released in 2018 by the Dwarf Tomato Project as an Open Source Seed Initiative pledged variety. - [Tomato, Dwarf Lemon Ice (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-dwarf-lemon-ice-organic/): Very aptly named, Dwarf Lemon Ice has clear skin and yellow flesh that combine for an icy yellow color. Pleasantly balanced sweet / tart flavor. Meaty, 3-7 oz oxheart shaped fruit have a blunt point at the blossom end. Occasional green shoulders. A unique and fun variety that is also good for containers. We like eating these ones right off the plant. Dwarf Lemon Ice was released in 2016 by the Dwarf Tomato Project and is an Open Source Seed Initiative pledged variety. - [Tomato, Nevsky (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-nevsky-organic/): Another round, red, mid-season tomato? It takes a lot for a tomato to impress us these days and Nevsky surely did. Dwarf plants with good disease resistance produce fruit that hold late into the season when all other varieties succumb to wet, cold weather. Attractive, meaty, round, slightly flat, slicer type fruit average 6 oz. The blemish-free fruit keep well after harvest. And it tastes really good, too. A product of the breeding program at the North West Research Institute of Agriculture near St. Petersburg, Russia. Donated to the USDA by Marina Danilenko in 1969 from the former USSR. We sourced it from Tatiana's TOMATObase. - [Sweet Pepper, Ise (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/sweet-pepper-ise-organic/): Ise is similar in flavor and texture to the common Shishito pepper, but sweeter and larger fruited. Fruit are 3 ½” long by 1” wide and still small enough to prep in all of the classic Shishito ways, but the larger size makes for a quicker harvest. Ise is more well-suited for charcoal grilling since the wider fruit stay on the grill. Shishito peppers took the fresh market scene by storm a few years ago and quickly became popular with restaurants and home cooks for their delicious simplicity, usually served roasted or grilled with olive oil and salt. Ise's fresh mild flavor is neither sweet nor hot and really pops once cooked. They’re great as a bite-sized stuffing pepper, think jalapeño popper without the heat. Usually harvested underripe when green, they are also good after they’ve ripened to red. Thin-walled and suitable for drying. Originally from Japan where they are a popular snack food. Ise comes to us from Tatiana’s TOMATObase, they originally sourced it from the Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. - [Hot Pepper, Serrano Huasteca (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-serrano-huasteca-organic/): A small fruited Serrano type pepper that produces flavorful, hot, dark green, 2-2 1/2” fruit even in cool summers. Serrano Huasteca peppers are a bit slower to turn red and ripen than some of our other early hot pepper varieties, but the extra flavor is worth the wait. Serrano peppers are popular for their field productivity and diverse utility in the kitchen, and are the second most used hot pepper in Mexican cuisine after jalapeños. Fairly juicy considering their small size, they are used in Mexican hot sauces and pico de gallo. The Huasteca region of Mexico is located on the east coast along the Gulf of Mexico, and Serrano peppers are originally from the mountainous areas of this region. Our seed came from Tatiana’s TOMATObase, who sourced it from the Seed Saver’s Exchange yearbook. Aka, Serrano Hueasteco. - [Hot Pepper, Prik Chi Faa (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-prik-chi-faa-organic/): A large fruited Thai hot pepper that resembles a fat, thick-walled cayenne with smooth shiny skin. Nice large 6" long fruit enable fast harvest. This type of pepper is often used when still green and underripe, when medium hot peppers are desired in recipes such as green curry paste, chili dipping sauces, peanut satay sauce and Thai stir fry. Once ripe and red, Prik Chi Faa also dries well, making a delicious chili powder. Our friend Willis Ransom of Whisper Hollow Farm also discovered they are delicious when lightly smoked. They retained smoke very well while gaining a extra depth of flavor. We are selecting this variety for early ripening and productivity in northern climates. Name translates from Thai as 'sky' pepper. - [Hot Pepper, Aji Colorado (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-aji-colorado-organic/): Thin-walled hot pepper great for drying and grinding into powder, and also good eaten fresh or made into hot sauce. Aji Colorado produces 2-3” long bright red fruit that are hotter than a Jalapeño but not quite as hot as a Cayenne and the heat dissipates quickly. Sweet fruity flavor complements the heat. Like many C. baccatum species peppers, Aji Colorado has a unique aromatic character reminiscent of pine or citrus peel. Cold weather tolerant and holds quality late into the season. This excellent, high-yielding short-season adapted variety came to us via Strictly Medicinal Seeds of Williams, Oregon. Originally from Peru and Bolivia. - [Onion, Rose de Roscoff Keravel (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/onion-rose-de-roscoff-keravel-organic/): The pretty rosy-pink skin of this onion is not the only thing that sets it apart. Flavor is both delicately sweet and piquant, complex yet not overpowering. White flesh with light pink layers. Good for braiding and long storage. Rose de Roscoff Keravel is a selection of a type of onion known as Oignon de Roscoff in France. This French heritage cultivar has been grown since the 17th century in Roscoff, Brittany. High in Vitamin C, onions from Brittany were sold to merchant ships as a cure for scurvy. From the 1800s until the 1950s, “Onion Johnnies” would travel as far as England selling their famous onions, often on bicycles draped with onion braids. The climate in Brittany must be similar enough to our location in the Pacific Northwest, because Rose de Roscoff Keravel is right at home here. We want to thank Myrtha Zierock for sourcing the seed and bringing this variety to Oregon. - [Onion, Franzisco (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/onions/onion-franzisco-organic/): Long day yellow storage onion that consistently performs well in our trials. Reliably produces perfectly round 5” bulbs with tight wrappers perfect for extended storage. Franzisco is famous for its high yield potential and strong root systems that are resilient under many growing conditions including dry farming. Franzisco is a good companion to Fehmel-Stieg, and also came to us via Harold Frasier who worked as an onion breeder for the global commercial onion market. - [Lettuce, Rosalita (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/lettuce/lettuce-rosalita-organic/): Semi-savoyed, burgundy red leaves are a good texture and color added to salad mix. Also grows to form large, open romaine heads. Rosalita has a red-green combo that is now less common, yet beautifully fresh. Relatively heat resistant and slow to bolt. Selected by Rob Johnston to have, among other traits, tall upright stature and resistance to tip burn. Full size leaves can grow large and are good for lettuce wraps. Once a common variety popular on organic farms, but now hard to find. We are happy to preserve this old school crunchy and sweet lettuce. Bred by Johnny’s Selected Seeds and introduced in 1989, its PVP has expired and is now in the public domain. Aka, Johnny's Red Romaine. - [Cucumber, White Heron (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/cucumbers/cucumber-white-heron-organic/): White Heron slicing cucumbers are similar to True Lemon but with a classic slicer shape and lighter white color. Fruit are best harvested under 5” long, when thin skin is still tender enough to make peeling unnecessary. We like to harvest them when the stem end of the fruit just starts to turn pale yellow. Also good for pickles when harvested even smaller. Highly productive and great taste, too. Said to have some resistance to downy mildew. A family heirloom variety originally from Seed Savers Exchange member Keith Herron of New York, and introduced commercially in 2017 by our friends at Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. - [Beet, Touchstone Gold (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beets/beet-touchstone-gold-organic/): Touchstone Gold beets are vibrant orange on the outside with a golden yellow interior and green leaves. Color holds well through cooking and doesn’t bleed or stain as with traditional red varieties. Flavor is delightfully sweet and not overly earthy. Touchstone Gold is an improved variety of gold beet developed by Alf Christianson Seed Company, selected for higher germination and uniformity. We grew this variety years ago for our winter CSA and farmers market booth. They make a wonderful tricolor beet bunch when combined with Chioggia and red beets. - [Beet, Kamuolini 2 (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beets/beet-kamuolini-2-organic/): Vibrant color, beautiful round shape and classic sweet beet flavor make this variety our ideal beet. Vigorous leaf growth makes this beet two vegetables in one, easy to pull and perfect to tie in bunches. Leaf stems have an intriguing magenta-purple tint. In our trials against the overly common Red Ace F1 hybrid we found Kamuolini 2 to have better shape, flavor, yield, color, and taller tops. The Baltic region is a center of beet diversity and one of its centers of origin, so it makes good sense that we would find our ideal beet in Lithuania. Bred by and given to The Seed Ambassadors Project by Dr. Rasa Karkleliene, a vegetable seed breeder at the Lithuanian Institute of Horticulture. - [Broccoli, Piracicaba (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/broccoli-cauliflower/broccoli-piracicaba-organic/): A heat-tolerant, small heading broccoli similar to broccolini. Where it really shines is not in its initial small head, but in the endless tasty side shoot production. The leaves are as delicious as the tender green heads and sweet stems. Unique to the world of broccoli varieties, Piracicaba's small shoots and loose florets make it seem like it could be the primordial ancestor of modern supermarket hybrid broccoli. Though originally from subtropical Brazil, we have found that it thrives in our temperate environment and tolerates some frost. Vegetable farmer Carolina Lees of Corvus Landing Farm located on the coast of Oregon, says that Piracicaba is one of her favorite crops for her cool summers, and her farmer's market customers love it, too. Originally bred by the University of Piracicaba in Brazil. - [Popcorn, Early Pink Pearl (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/corn/popcorn-early-pink-pearl-organic/): Early maturing, high yielding, very tasty, and with a range of captivating pink colors to boot! Early Pink Pearl is the perfect complement to Dakota Black. The 4-6” ears are very ornamental and range from dark purple-pink to a light pink pearl tone. Easily matures in our climate. Petite popped kernels are a very light yellow with a mild flavor, not as hearty tasting as Dakota Black but more flavor than store-bought yellow popcorn. Selected from an early pink variety originally grown by Lonesome Whistle Farm in Oregon - [Beet, Lutz Green Leaf (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/beets/beet-lutz-green-leaf-organic/): An old standby winter storage beet with vibrant red roots and pale green leaves. Some Lutz strains commonly available have red leaves and stems – we are offering the original green-stemmed variety whose leaves have much better flavor. Our friend Avram Drucker of Garlicana, who stewarded this variety for many years, says, “If I had to pick only one variety for homesteading, there's just no question that this is it.” Lutz Green Leaf is claimed by most, to be “not a pretty beet,” but we disagree, finding it to be quite pretty and amazingly sweet as well. Light green leaves are especially tasty for beet greens, and are good when young in salads or cooked up like chard when more mature. Word is roots stay tender even when very large (up to 12 lbs!) - I can't imagine any beet being pretty at that size. Lutz Green Leaf has won us over. - [Adaptive Seeds Sticker](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/adaptive-seeds-sticker/): If you would like to receive a FREE Adaptive Seeds sticker, simply add it to your cart with your order. This sticker is 2” round with a white background and green and purple design. Outdoor quality vinyl stickers are UV protected and have permanent adhesive. - [Seed Ambassadors Sticker Rainbow](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/gifts-merch/seed-ambassadors-sticker-rainbow/): Plaster a rainbow of stickers on your computer, put one on every garden tool, or pick your favorite color and share the rest with your friends. Outdoor quality vinyl stickers are UV protected and have permanent adhesive. - [Seed Collections, Annual Flower Lover (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/collections-mixes/collections/seed-collections-flower-lover-organic/): Who doesn't love a flower garden? These collections are an assortment of 7 flowers chosen to create a flower patch with a mix of colors, plant textures and layers, and a prolonged blooming period. Pick either our Annual or Perennial collection. - [Seed Collections, Children’s Garden Fun Spring-Summer (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/collections-mixes/collections/seed-collections-childrens-garden-fun-organic/): Whether you've got your own kids or there's a special little person in your life that loves to garden, this collection consists of easy-to-grow, safe, kid-approved plants. Hand the packets over and watch their wild garden grow! - [Sorghum, Ba Ye Qi (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/sorghum-ba-ye-qi-organic/): By the far the earliest maturing grain sorghum we've grown. 7' tall plants have one goal in mind and that is to make grain. Sugar content of the stalks and quantity of forage is not huge, which helps it mature grain so early. Sorghum flour is delicious and makes excellent gluten-free baked goods. Whole kernels can be cooked like brown rice and used just like rice, quinoa, couscous, or traditional sorghum porridge. In China, sorghum is also used to make beer and liquor. Plants thrive in sub-optimal growing conditions. Ba Ye Qi sorghum is from the Nei Mongol autonomous region of northern China. Our stock seed came to us from Sherck Seeds in Indiana, a seed company working to preserve unique staple food crop genetics. Aka, Ba Yi Qi. - [Quinoa, Apellewa (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/quinoa-apellewa-organic/): The earliest maturing quinoa we have ever grown, or heard of for that matter. Even with such early ripening, Apellewa produces great yields of large, mostly white seeds. We might be biased because it is our most recent amazing quinoa find, but we really were impressed! Slightly variable, mostly cream-gold and green plants with the occasional pink to red-toned standout. Plants grow 4-6' tall. Our planting stock came from Bountiful Gardens in Willits, California, just prior to their closing. We have received so many good varieties from them over the years were saddened to see them go. Luckily, the seed lives on. - [Einkorn (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/grains/einkorn-organic/): The first form of wheat to be cultivated over 10,000 years ago. Einkorn has much higher protein than modern wheat, but is much lower yielding. The name einkorn is German for 'single grain,' since it has only one grain per hull. Similar to emmer, einkorn is also spring sown and can be easier to digest for those with gluten sensitivities. Though this grain is easy to grow, nutritious, and delicious, it is very difficult to thresh the grain from the hull. - [Zinnia, Oriole (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/zinnia-oriole-organic/): Lovely bright orange blossoms of Oriole Zinnia are so brilliantly colored they almost seem incandescent. Long, sturdy stems are great for cutting. Blooms right up until frost for good late season color, and provides excellent habitat and food for pollinators and songbirds. Big branching plants are covered in flowers. Cutting for bouquets and deadheading will promote even more flowering. Deer resistant, tender annual. Classic variety from the 1920s. - [Sweet Pea, Wiltshire Ripple (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sweet-pea-wiltshire-ripple-organic/): With red to maroon streaks and specks on white background petals, this variety is a striking change from classic pastel bicolor sweet peas. Modern sweet peas often lack the sweet scent that gives the species its name in the first place, however, Wiltshire Ripple is fully and joyously fragrant. Grows easily with an early spring sowing, and begins to flower in May or June. Days to flower is partly influenced by day length and sowing date. The earlier you sow, the earlier they will bloom, but flowers before April are unlikely. Plants can grow to 5' tall. A sturdy trellis is recommended. Originally from England, a hotbed of sweet pea breeding. - [Nigella, Exotic Love-in-a-Mist (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/nigella-exotic-love-in-a-mist-organic/): Purple-blue flowers are 2 ½" wide with a captivating cluster of extruded dark purple stamens and pistils at the center. Pollinator friendly blooms attract almost as many insect visitors as California poppies. Long, 16" stems make great fresh cut flowers with blooms lasting just over one week – a little longer than other nigella. Seed pods are also captivating and look amazing in everlasting flower arrangements. Exotic Love-in-a-Mist is an easy to grow, direct sown annual, happy in partial shade to full sun. Native to Spain. We would like to thank Fedco Seeds for turning us on to this variety. Related to, but not the same as Black-Seeded Culinary Nigella which is used as a culinary herb. Aka, Spanish Fennel Flower. - [Sunflower, The Serah & Sarah Mix (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/sunflower-the-serah-sarah-mix-organic/): A sunflower party, this collection is an evolving mixture of sunflower colors and growth habits that we have been curating since 2005. Selected over the years from various crosses and volunteers. Many are classic yellows as well as unique reds and a few lemon yellow types. But the real gems in the mix are long petaled bicolor yellow and red types that stop us in our tracks when we find them. Most are good cut flowers, but some plants grow to 12' or more making harvest fun, albeit inefficient. This mix is our choice for naturalizing as they are particularly good at volunteering year after year. - [Foxglove, Strawberry (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/foxglove-strawberry-organic/): Stunning pink-peach bell shaped blossoms form on 2-4' tall spikes that bloom for weeks and make a great cut flower. Hummingbirds and pollinators love the flowers. Strawberry foxglove is the result of an interspecific cross made almost 200 years ago and is not invasive like the wild types are. Basal rosette of evergreen foliage stays attractive year-round. This short lived perennial is deer resistant and prefers part shade. Deadheading in mid-summer may lead to second round of flowering. Aka, Digitalis x mertonensis. - [California Poppy, Golden West (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/california-poppy-golden-west-organic/): This beautiful strain of the California state flower has been available since the early 1920s. Compact plants have ferny greyblue foliage and grow to 18" tall. Light golden flowers have orange centers. Blossoms seem like beacons to native pollinators, especially bumblebees. Flowers open with the sun and close in the evening. Very low maintenance and drought tolerant, Golden West California poppy also tolerates poor soil conditions and naturalizes easily. The whole plant has been used medicinally as a pain reliever, sedative, and to treat anxiety and restlessness. Best sown in fall or very early spring. Will self-sow. - [Bachelor’s Button, Mauve Ball (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/bachelors-button-mauve-ball-organic/): A mauve/lilac purple version of the classic Bachelor's Button. Plants grow to 36" with fully double flowers on long, sturdy stems that make a great addition to bouquets. Blooms early and keeps going right up until frost, providing a great mid-summer to late season nectar source for pollinators. May be sown in fall for earlier flowers the next spring. Will self-sow. Aka, Cornflower, Bachelor Buttons. - [Aster, Matsumoto Striped Adaptive Mix (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/flowers/aster-matsumoto-striped-adaptive-mix-organic/): We received this strain as a supposed purple striped selection and it appears to have been a hybrid. After a few years of selection, all plants are striped but the color varies throughout the population, and we like it that way. They are all semi-double, 2" wide, white striped flowers that vary on a spectrum from dark purple to light lavender to pink. Plants are tall enough (2 ½') and stems are long and strong enough to make great cut flowers. They hold well in a vase and their striped petals offers beautiful contrast. Plants are also disease resistant. Asters are a gateway flower to seed saving – choose your favorite color stripe combo and go for it! A dehybridized population from the Matsumoto series, which was developed by Japanese breeders specifically for the cut flower market. - [Oregano, White Flowered Greek (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/oregano-white-flowered-greek-organic/): With its pungent, flavorful leaves, this is possibly the best strain for culinary use. A must have for the perennial herb garden, oregano is essential in many Mediterranean dishes. Best used straight out of the garden but also delicious dried. We even use it as a northern-grown replacement for Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) in some recipes. Small, white flowers attract beneficial insects, including many bumblebees. Very easy to grow – does well in dry or wet conditions and is happy in containers, too. Greek oregano oil is used medicinally as an anti-microbial and anti-fungal. Formerly listed as Origanum heracleoticum. - [Mullein, Dense-Flowered (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/mullein-dense-flowered-organic/): Beautiful and burly, Dense-Flowered mullein produces lots of easily harvestable pale yellow flowers and sage green leaves for medicinal use and is pretty enough to grow as an insectary or ornamental. Easy to grow. Mullein is said to have a soothing effect on a dry cough, and a tincture made from the flowers soothes the nerves. Some people add dried leaves to smoking blends. We wanted to add Verbascum thapsus to our catalog until we discovered that it's illegal to sell the seed due to its tendency to out-compete native plants. Then we found this bigger, legal cousin available from The Plant Good Seed Company in Ojai, California. While V. densiflorum is not listed as invasive, it will self-sow -- care should be taken to harvest flower heads before seeds mature. - [Basil, Siracusa (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/herbs/basil-siracusa-organic/): A sweet Italian basil in the true Genovese style. Siracusa has a deep, sweet aroma that is oddly missing from some modern commercial basil. Bright green leaves are slightly smoother and less pointy than Italian Mountain Sweet. Flavor is delicious in pesto alla trapanese, aka Sicilian pesto, which uses almonds and tomatoes. Also perfect when simply chopped and tossed with pasta. Despite its Genovese style, this seed was found in Sicily by Lane Selman of the Culinary Breeding Network. She purchased it in a hand folded white envelope at a small garden store in Siracusa (Syracuse). - [Spinach, Matador (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/spinach/spinach-matador-organic/): An excellent deep green spinach for spring and fall production. Relatively heat tolerant, slow to bolt, with excellent flavor. Matador ranked as one of the best tasting in our spinach trials. Round leaves are good harvested small for salad mix, and for bunches once larger. While uncommon in the US, it is a workhorse variety in Europe and won the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit in 2000. We sourced our stock seed from Bingenheimer Saatgut, a biodynamic seed company in Germany. - [Turnip, Tokyo Market (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/turnips-rutabagas/turnip-tokyo-market-organic/): Salad type turnip that is delicate yet crunchy with a distinct sweetness unlike other turnips. Very quick to mature, best grown in spring or fall. White, slightly flattened globe-shaped roots grow to 3" but we prefer to harvest and eat them at 2." Tokyo Market turnips are delicious raw in salads, sliced with salt, snacked on whole, or cooked. Greens are tender, nutritious, and delicious, too. We have long dreamed of adding this venerable open pollinated variety to our catalog and are excited to finally do so! - [Tomato, Cascade Village Blue (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-cascade-village-blue-organic/): This lovely indigo saladette type tomato holds well on and off the vine, is beautiful, and tastes great, too. Dark purple-skinned, 3 oz globes ripen to red on the bottom, often with an awesome red star shape that forms under the calyx common to indigo tomatoes. Flesh is red, foliage has a nice dark purple tinge. Bred by Tom Wagner of Everett, Washington, from a cross between an indigo type and his famed Green Zebra tomato. - [Tomato, Ropreco (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-ropreco-organic/): Productive and early, this heirloom Italian sauce tomato yields 2-3" red, plump 2-3 oz fruit that have a small point at the blossom end. Very good raw flavor compared to other paste tomato varieties. A good choice for short season or cool summer locations. Can out yield Roma, especially in cool summers. Shows resistance to Fusarium and blossom end rot. - [Tomato, Ararat Flame (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-ararat-flame-organic/): Very attractive bushy plants are heavy yielders all through the season of flattened, medium-sized, deep red 4-6 oz fruit. Great rich balanced flavor makes Ararat Flame tomato one of our favorites. For best flavor, we like to pick the fruit when they have slightly yellow-green shoulders.  This kiss of shoulder color is a signal that they are perfectly ripe. Appearance is similar to Marmande but with less ruffled shoulders. Our research traces this variety to Debrecen, Hungary, and is possibly from Armenia near Mount Ararat before that. Originally sourced from Gerhard Bohl, who says that "it grows at the foot of the mountain." Ararat Geflammte in German. - [Tomato, Zuckertraube (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-zuckertraube-organic/): Red cherry tomato with balanced sweet flavor, high yields, and very tall vines. Fruit are slightly larger than average cherry tomatoes. The delicious flavor and easy picking make it attractive and a quick pint filler. An excellent choice for red cherry production on market farms. Zuckertraube is German for 'sugar grape' and it is sold in Germany as a cocktail tomato (!). Variety collected by The Seed Ambassadors Project from Bingenheimer Saatgut, a German biodynamic seed company. - [Tomato, Green Bumble Bee (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/tomatoes/tomato-green-bumble-bee-organic/): Large, oblong cherry tomatoes are green with dark purple stripes – similar to a cherry version of the legendary Green Zebra. When mixed in a pint with our other two bumble bee varieties, Pink Bumble Bee and Purple Bumble Bee, it offers great complementary color and flavor. Nice firm texture lends some split resistance. Sweet balanced flavor. Inverse coloration selected out of Purple Bumble Bee by Tatiana Kouchnareva, the creator of Tatiana's TOMATObase, in British Columbia, Canada. - [Radish, Rudi (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/radishes/radish-rudi-organic/): A very high quality classic red bunching radish. Globe shaped with bright white flesh. Refreshingly crisp and quite tasty. Uniform, quick to mature, and holds well much longer in the field than most open pollinated bunching radishes. Rudi was bred by Enza Zaden, the highly regarded Dutch seed company, before they began focusing entirely on hybrids and patented seed. - [Hot Pepper, Lady Han (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-lady-han-organic/): This Korean type pepper is intermediate in size, shape, and heat level when compared to the smaller, hotter Korean, and the larger, milder Hong Gochu Large. After ripening to a classic red color, fruit dry down to a deep, dark, mysteriously translucent red. Possibly one of the most beautiful peppers we grow. Lady Han hot pepper has perfectly balanced flavor and appearance. An excellent all-purpose choice for making gochugaru (dried, coarsely ground red pepper flakes), and fermented chili paste like gochujang. This variety was gifted to us in an internet seed swap by Kristyn Leach of Namu Farm in California, who received it from a source in Korea. Kristyn is a seed steward of many Korean varieties, which can be found through Second Generation Seed. - [Hot Pepper, Hong Gochu Large (Organic)](https://www.adaptiveseeds.com/product/vegetables/peppers/hot-pepper-hong-gochu-large-organic/): Milder than the variety Korean, but still has a bit of heat, enough to give a recipe a light kick. Shiny, light-green peppers ripen to a bright red. After the fruit begin to dry a bit, they turn a much deeper, darker red. Hong gochu simply means 'red pepper' in Korean. Our research tells us, hong gochu signifies a category of peppers, so we added 'Large' to the variety name to indicate the fruit shape is on the larger side of the Korean pepper spectrum. When fruit are still green they are called put gochu (green pepper) or oi gochu (cucumber pepper) in Korean. At this under-ripe stage they are stuffed, breaded and fried to make a delicious Korean dish called gochu twigim. When fruit are harvested ripe and then dried, the chili flakes or powder adds a nice warmth and rich flavor to dishes. If seeds are removed, the heat is very light. Hong Gochu Large is perfect for kimchi and a great choice for making Korean gochugaru (dried, coarsely ground red pepper flakes), and gochujang (fermented chili paste). We originally sourced this seed from the Sample Seed Shop, who acquired it directly from a source in Korea. We have spent several years selecting this slightly variable variety for plants that thrive and produce well on our farm in Oregon.
