Shvelisi Seed Garlic (Organic)
Hardneck Purple Stripe type
Shvelisi garlic is a very nice hardneck variety originally from the village of Skhvilisi in the Republic of Georgia. With a strong rich flavor it is good for almost any purpose. Famous for its sweet flavor when roasted, it is also good raw (although some may find it a little too spicy). We highly recommend this variety for market farm production as well as for home gardening because it consistently produces large bulbs. Plants have a prostrate and sprawling growth habit, which may help it survive heavy snowfall, but makes Shvelisi less suitable for green garlic bunches. The bulbs sometimes have a nice red color depending on growing conditions and the inner wrappers are a beautiful fuchsia. Stores 6-7 months (longer when stored in a dry location) with 8-12 cloves per bulb.
Avram from Garlicana notes that it is “more commonly known by the ironic moniker ‘Chesnok Red.’ ‘Chesnok’ is the Russian word for garlic. If the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia is indicative of the less than harmonious relationship between the two countries, they have even less in common linguistically. In Georgian the word for garlic is ‘niori.’”
Shvelisi seed garlic minimum bulb size is 1.75 inches wide. Average 8-9 bulbs per pound, 8 – 10 cloves per bulb.

Separate cloves but do not peel. Plant each clove 2” deep, blunt end down, from October through February. Space plants 6-8” apart in rows 1’ apart. Apply extra fertilizer in March.
Harvest bulbs in mid-July, when roughly 1⁄2 of the leaves are still green. Brush soil off of roots and hang in well-ventilated, shady spot to cure.
