Winter Squash, Doran Round (Organic)

Cucurbita moschata. 100 days.

Unique, small round butternut different from other butternut types as it looks more like a tan, squat pie pumpkin. Very delicious sweet flavor becomes more developed in storage. Flesh is a deep orange color. Some fruit are very round while others have slight ribbing. When properly stored (at room temperature in a dry location) they can keep for over a year. Days to maturity is fairly late for the PNW at around 100 days, but the 2-4 lb fruit can be picked earlier and cured inside with great results. Given to us originally by Lieven David, a plant breeder and seed saver we met during our first Seed Ambassadors Trip to Europe in 2007. Variety from the Netherlands.

Geographical Origin

Sow indoors in 2-4” pots with good potting soil May through mid-June. Transplant into the garden 1-2 weeks after sprouting to 2-3’ centers and 6′ wide rows. May also be direct sown when soil is warm. Young plants are sensitive, we recommend row cover to protect from frost and insects.

Seed Saving

To save seed, scoop out seeds when you eat the fruit. Rinse off and dry. Isolate from other squash of the same species by at least ½ mile.

    Doran may take a bit longer to ripen but it worked just fine here at the Oregon coast. We had it even in a little bit shadier area but that did not stop it from growing. The yield was good, about 2-3 fruit per plant, each one delivering like 3 cups or so, some less some more, of meat after roasting. The flesh is strikingly orange and very sweet, getting super sweet in storage. I will grow them again, this is a fun variety.

    i started these indoors under lights on april 1st. by may 1st they were in gallon pots in the greenhouse. when they finally made it outside & in the ground they did great & grew vigorously. BUT they took forever to make flowers & for the first 2 weeks they only made male flowers! i was watching VERY closely and when the female flowers finally arrived i made sure to pollinate them by hand to make sure they would get on with it because it was already so late. now at the end of september (6 full months after planting!) only one squash fully ripened. please avoid this strain unless you have an 8 month growing season.

    We grew three squash plants in one trellised 4×4 plot, which is more crowded than ideal. Nevertheless, our one Doran Round Squash plant produced three fruit in the 2lb range, and handily outcompeted our other two varieties in taste. It’s quite possibly the best-tasting butternut-type squash (C. moschata) I’ve ever eaten. All three fruit ripened fully on the vine, and stored well through the winter in the kitchen on a windowsill.

    I grew this in zone 5b upstate New York, and it has done very well. I grew mine on a trellis arch and it has been a very vigorous and disease resistant plant. It seems to be quite resistant to downy and powdery mildew, and wasn’t bothered by vine borers at all. it was still going strong in October (with only a few dead leaves near the ground), when all the other squash in our community garden were wiped out by pests and disease.

    This squash was so easy to grow. No powdery mildew or squash vine borers. Just kept is watered as needed and watch it grow. Got a dozen from one hill, partly shaded. Flavor was sweet and nutty, similar to Burgess Buttercup. We loved it.
