Valerian, Anthos Arterner Mix (Organic)

Valeriana officianalis. Perennial in zones 4–9.

A mix of improved strains of valerian, preferred for commercial production due to high essential oil content and good root yields. Valerian is a favored herbal treatment for insomnia and the small, pink and white flowers were once used in perfumes. Considered a powerful brain and muscle sedative, valerian can have varying effects on people, even stimulating some. Dried valerian flowers are used in a biodynamic preparation that is applied to compost to stimulate phosphorous. Plants can grow to 5′ tall and spread slowly via rhizomes.

Valerian prefers full sun to part shade. Best started indoors and transplanted into the garden in spring. Sow seeds shallowly in soil mix, as germination is light dependent and may take up to 2 weeks. Space at 12-24 inches, when plants have a few true leaves. Self-seeding perennial.

Seed Saving

Cut seed heads when downy fuzz (like dandelion fluff) emerges and seed starts to drop. After-ripen in a paper bag or on a tarp for one week, then shake or rub seeds from flower heads. Winnow and screen to clean. Finish air-drying if necessary before sealing in airtight container.
