Tomato, Katja (Organic)

Solanum lycopersicum. Pink. 60 days. Indet.

Bushy plants produce big, pink, 3-5″ slicer tomatoes that weigh 8-16 oz. Very early and reliable. Gorgeous and delicious. Sarah thinks this is our best tomato (*objectively*) and Andrew thinks it is one of our favorites (subjectively). Does very well even in cool, shady gardens. Ripened a tasty 1 lb fruit (and many smaller fruit) outdoors at Corvus Landing Farm in Neskowin, Oregon, in the summer of 2010—the year of no ripe tomatoes for many Oregon coast gardeners. Originates in the city of Slyudyanka, on the shores of Lake Baikal in Siberia, where it is also grown outdoors. It is not clear whether it was developed by Katarina Konovna Sviatova (Katja) herself, or if it is an old Russian commercial variety. Received from Søren Holt of The Toad’s Garden blog, and Frøsamlerne, the Danish seed savers, who received it from the Sviatova family.

Geographical Origin

,

Sow indoors in flats with good potting soil as early as February, but no later than April. Keep warm and well-watered. Up pot seedlings into 4” pots once they have two true leaves. Transplant into the garden once danger of frost has passed.

Seed Saving

Collect seeds from ripe fruit by squeezing into a jar and add 25% more water. Wait a few days for mold to form. When seeds sink and gel-sac is gone, stir, add water, then decant and rinse to clean. Dry thoroughly. Tomatoes are mostly self-pollinating; isolation is not usually needed for seeds to be true to type.

Where did you grow this variety? Mountain West US

We grew this tomato in Colorado at 6500′ elevation and it was the first big (non-cherry) tomato to ripen. We grow a lot of early varieties, so that’s saying something. And it is so delicious! Some early tomatoes are early and tasteless, but not Katja. Will definitely grow this one next year.
