Marigold, Yellow Supreme (Organic)

Tagetes erecta. 55 days.

With big yellow pom-poms that seem impossibly bright, Yellow Supreme Marigold appears dayglow when the light hits it just right. To borrow from the description for Yellowest Yellow paint by Stuart Semple, “Visible light is powerfully reflected by this high pigment” … flower. Sunglasses are recommended. This ultra-bright flower is available to everyone except Anish Kapoor! (who won’t share his black paint color!). 🙂  Plants stay relatively small for an African marigold, at around two feet, but still produce loads of 3”-4”, double blooms on stems that are just long enough to make good cut flowers. We traced Yellow Supreme back to Livingston’s seed catalog from 1934, when the catalog hilariously boasted, “Not yet entered in All-American Selections but surely commands a Gold Medal position.” We greatly appreciate Select Seeds of Connecticut for helping keep this classic variety from going extinct and for being a wonderful source of rare flower seeds for us to play with.

Sow shallowly in flats indoors in spring, 4-6 weeks before planting out. Transplant this tender annual to 12-18” centers when danger of frost has passed. May also be direct sown when soil is warm. Prefers full sun & well-drained soil.

Seed Saving

Collect seeds from seedheads that are fully dry. Thresh by hand or by shaking branches into a bucket, screen out large debris and fan winnow to remove light seeds. Dry seeds completely before sealing in airtight container. Cross-pollination may occur; if saving seed, isolate from other varieties of the same species by 1/4 mile.
