Bush Snap Bean, Grenoble (Organic)
Phaseolus vulgaris. Green Pods. 60 days.
Tender and tasty fancy green bush snap bean that holds quality late into the season. One of the sweetest and most delicious green beans, Grenoble always ranks at the top of the list in our flavor trials. Whereas most modern bush snap beans have a more determinant growth habit that causes them to go big and then go home, Grenoble goes big and then… keeps on going! We were snacking on a few delicious and tender green beans even while harvesting seed for this variety – despite plants not having been irrigated for over a month! This trait is not ideal for seed production but we’re not complaining – having field snacks at harvest was a nice treat.Â
Bred by Royal Sluis/Petoseed, a great plant breeding powerhouse of the 1990s, Grenoble was available in the early 2000s from Johnny’s Selected Seeds, yet it was unfortunately discontinued a few years later. We were first introduced to its amazing flavor in 2004 as farm apprentices at Horton Road Organics in Blachly, Oregon and we have been chasing it ever since. We got lucky some years back when our friend Dan Brisbois, Canadian seed farmer and author of The Seed Farmer, sent us some of the last remaining commercial seed stock. Thank you, Dan! Resistant to Anthracnose, Bean Common Mosaic Virus (race 1), and Halo Blight.
Direct sow 1″ deep beginning early May in rows that are 1′ apart. Thin seedlings to 3-6″ spacing. Protect early sowings from frost. Succession sowing every 3 weeks through late June will ensure continual harvest. Shell seeds from fully dry pods by hand or by dancing on pods. Winnow to clean. Test for dryness with a hammer – dry beans shatter.
Seed Saving
Some cross-pollination may occur, but beans mostly self-pollinate.
