Tomato, Ararat Flame (Organic)

Solanum lycopersicum. 60 days. Semi-det.

Very attractive bushy plants are heavy yielders all through the season of flattened, medium-sized, deep red 4-6 oz fruit. Great rich balanced flavor makes Ararat Flame tomato one of our favorites. For best flavor, we like to pick the fruit when they have slightly yellow-green shoulders.  This kiss of shoulder color is a signal that they are perfectly ripe. Appearance is similar to Marmande but with less ruffled shoulders. Our research traces this variety to Debrecen, Hungary, and is possibly from Armenia near Mount Ararat before that. Originally sourced from Gerhard Bohl, who says that “it grows at the foot of the mountain.” Ararat Geflammte in German.

Geographical Origin

Sow indoors in flats with good potting soil as early as February, but no later than April. Keep warm and well-watered. Up pot seedlings into 4” pots once they have two true leaves. Transplant into the garden once danger of frost has passed.

Seed Saving

Collect seeds from ripe fruit by squeezing into a jar and add 25% more water. Wait a few days for mold to form. When seeds sink and gel-sac is gone, stir, add water, then decant and rinse to clean. Dry thoroughly. Tomatoes are mostly self-pollinating; isolation is not usually needed for seeds to be true to type.

Where did you grow this variety? Southeastern US

These only averaged around 3-4 oz, but they were tasty and they kept ripening when other tomatoes were beaten down with LB.
