Larkspur, Sydney Blue Picotee (Organic)
Consolida ajacis. 65 days.
Towering spires hold dozens of 1.5” flowers that bloom continuously up stems reaching to 5’ tall. Sydney Blue Picotee’s petals are white in the center and gradually transition to dark lavender at the edges for a romantic cottage garden feel. Larkspurs are a bit difficult to germinate and notoriously finicky about transplanting, but certainly worth the effort! Cold tolerant for early spring planting, resulting in earlier blooms. Uniform, highly branching plants form loads of vertical stems that can also be dried for everlasting arrangements. Sydney Blue Picotee was 2007 FleuroSelect Gold Medal winner, but has since become hard to find. We sourced our original seed from the UK over a decade ago and are super excited to finally bring it to the Adaptive Seeds catalog. All parts of this plant are considered poisonous if consumed.
Sow in early spring for summer blooms. Plants prefer growing in cool spring weather. We have had the best luck by sowing 1/4 in deep in pots or cells and covering to exclude light for a few weeks. Keep seeds moist, dark and cool (below 55°F) until germination. Pre-chilling seed for 7 days at 35°F may also improve germination. Transplant 6-12″ apart. Be very careful when transplanting – plants die easily if roots are damaged. Prefers full sun and rich soil.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds from seed heads that are fully dry. Thresh by hand, stomp or shake in a bin; winnow and screen to clean. Cross-pollinates easily; if saving seed, isolate from other varieties of the same species by 1/4 mile.
