Marigold, Kees’ Orange (Organic)

Tagetes erecta. 60-70 days.

Orange flowers have been selected to be the most vibrant, vivid orange color possible. Kees’ Orange marigold is an “African” marigold (aka, Mexican marigold) that is a great choice for cut flower production. Plants grow 3-4′ tall and produce many 3” wide double petaled blooms. Marigold flowers are well known for their natural dye properties. They also dry well and their subtle aromatics and vibrant color makes them a great addition to potpourri. Blooms of Kees’ Orange are larger and rounder than many other marigold varieties when dried, making them well suited for Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations and festive garland production. So-called African marigolds actually originate in Central America but were erroneously thought by European horticulturalists to be from Africa. They arrived in Europe via Africa just like “French beans” came to England via France from South America. Gotta love botanical misnomers! A variety selected by the famous Dutch flower breeder Kees Sahin.

Geographical Origin

Sow shallowly in flats indoors in spring, 4-6 weeks before planting out. Transplant this tender annual to 12-18” centers when danger of frost has passed. May also be direct sown when soil is warm. Prefers full sun & well-drained soil.

Seed Saving

Collect seeds from seedheads that are fully dry. Thresh by hand or by shaking branches into a bucket, screen out large debris and fan winnow to remove light seeds. Dry seeds completely before sealing in airtight container. Cross-pollination may occur; isolate from other varieties of the same species by 1/4 mile.
