Rudbeckia, Gloriosa Double Daisy (Organic)
Rudbeckia hirta. 70-90 days.
Large, bright yellow / golden black-eyed Susans form atop exceptionally tall (3’-4’!) stems. Most plants produce 5”-6” fully double flowers with copious amounts of petals, but a few single or semi-double flowers can be expected – all are beautiful! All flower types produced by Gloriosa Double Daisy Rudbeckia seem to last forever in the garden and also hold up well in a vase. We grew this variety upon recommendation of a trusted friend who grew cut flowers at the Oregon Coast, and it is now on the short list of flowers we want to grow every year. Originally a 1961 AAS Flower Winner that lost some uniformity in subsequent decades, it has recently been reselected beautifully by Wild Garden Seed, where we sourced our seed for planting. Perennial in zones 9-10.
Direct sow late winter to late spring, or sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Requires light to germinate. Thin / transplant to 15” centers, in full sun to part shade. Deadhead to prolong bloom.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds from seedheads that are fully dry. Shell by hand or by dancing, winnow to clean. Finish air-drying if necessary before sealing in airtight container. Some cross-pollination may occur; if saving seed, isolate from other varieties of the same species by 1/4 mile.
