Strawflower, Firefly (Organic)
Xerochrysum bracteatum. 75 Days.
Striking, fiery red and orange colored strawflowers were selected out of the classic Monstrosum Mix. We selected this variety over many years in an attempt to produce a stable, single color. However, Firefly strawflower had other plans, and continues to provide a diversity of flame-like color combinations. Producing both light and dark orange petals with varying degrees of red accents, Firefly would be good design inspiration for a spaceship or rocket engine. The papery blooms make great additions to dried flower arrangements and wreaths. Tall plants grow up to 3.5’ tall and are covered with 1.5″-2.5” flowers that can even stand up to a few light autumn frosts, providing loads of strawflowers continually from July through October in many areas. Aka. Helichrysum.
Surface sow after danger of frost or sow indoors for transplant starting 6 weeks before last frost. Thin or transplant starts to 12” centers. Prefers 60 – 70˚F soil temperature for germination in 7 – 10 days. Deadhead to prolong bloom. Annual.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds from flowers that are fully dry. Thresh by hand or by dancing, winnow to clean. Some cross-pollination may occur. Isolate from other varieties of the same species by 1/2 mile.
