Vekan Seed Garlic (Organic)
Hardneck Glazed type
We love Vekan garlic for its beautiful purple hue, and certainly for its rich pungent flavor. Definitely one of the best Glazed type hardneck garlics. A large, high yielding variety that is very consistent year to year. The shiny pink clove skins are easy to peel with 10-14 cloves per bulb. It originates in the town of Poběžovice, which is in the Plzeň (Pilsen) Region of the Czech Republic near the border with Bavaria. Known as Vekan in the Czech Republic, the variety is also known as “Vekak” due to a misspelling as it started to be shared throughout North America. First brought to North America by Dr. Boris Andrst, a retired ophthalmologist from New York, who acquired it from a farmer while traveling through Bohemia.
Glazed type garlic stores moderately well, mature mid season, and typically have glazed silvery-purple bulb wrappers. The plants are upright, dark-green, and good for green garlic production. With strongly bolting hardnecks, they make slender, highly coiled scapes.
Vekan seed garlic minimum bulb size is 1.75 inches across. Average 8-9 bulbs per pound and approximately 6-7 plantable cloves per bulb.

Separate cloves but do not peel. Plant each clove 2” deep, blunt end down, from October through February. Space plants 6-8” apart in rows 1’ apart. Apply extra fertilizer in March.
Harvest bulbs in mid-July, when roughly 1⁄2 of the leaves are still green. Brush soil off of roots and hang in well-ventilated, shady spot to cure.
