One of the classic herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, Vedic Ashwagandha has been used as an adaptogen to help manage stress and for its nerve calming effect. Traditionally used in India and Africa as a revitalizing and libido enhancing tonic, ashwagandha is native to India and has been utilized there for centuries. Grown for its intensely aromatic roots, which have an oddly musky aroma that certainly awakens the senses. 2-3 ft tall plants are related to tomatoes and ground cherries. The husked fruit turn red late in the growing season and are not considered edible. Roots are dug in the fall and either dried or made into tincture. Our seed stock originates from the excellent Strictly Medicinal Seeds in Williams, Oregon. Aka, Indian Ginseng.

Sow indoors in flats with good potting soil as early as February, but no later than April. Keep warm and well watered. Up pot seedlings into 4” pots when they have their first two true leaves. Transplant into the garden after danger of frost has passed, typically late May in western Oregon.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds from red ripe fruit. Thresh by hand or by dancing. Wash with water through a fine mesh colander to clean. Dry before sealing in airtight container. Isolate from other varieties of same species by 500 ft.
