Mullein, Dense-Flowered (Organic)
Verbascum densiflorum. Biennial.
Beautiful and burly, Dense-Flowered mullein produces lots of easily harvestable pale yellow flowers and sage green leaves for medicinal use and is pretty enough to grow as an insectary or ornamental. Easy to grow. Mullein is said to have a soothing effect on a dry cough, and a tincture made from the flowers soothes the nerves. Some people add dried leaves to smoking blends. We wanted to add Verbascum thapsus to our catalog until we discovered that it’s illegal to sell the seed due to its tendency to out-compete native plants. Then we found this bigger, legal cousin available from The Plant Good Seed Company in Ojai, California. While V. densiflorum is not listed as invasive, it will self-sow — care should be taken to harvest flower heads before seeds mature.
Surface sow seeds very shallowly early spring or late summer. Thin to 12” – 18” in all directions. Grows well in almost any conditions. Biennial. Will self-seed and spread aggressively. Deadhead to limit self-seeding.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds from seed heads that are fully dry. Shell by hand, winnow or screen to clean. Some cross-pollination may occur, isolate from varieties of the same species by 1/4 mile.
