Pumpkin, Emerald Naked Seeded (Organic)

Cucurbita pepo. 90-110 days.

Hulless pumpkin seeds (aka, pepitas) are some of the tastiest and most nutritious treats that one can grow in the garden or farm field. They are mind bogglingly delicious when freshly roasted with a little salt. So why not grow your own with Emerald Naked Seeded pumpkin? Our friend Chris Homanics has been working with hulless pumpkins for years and has developed the most incredible genepool we could imagine: Little pumpkins, big pumpkins, green striped or all orange on the outside. Not all of the pumpkins will make good eatin’ (however some of them will) but that is not the goal. Emerald Naked Seeded pumpkin is an interbreeding population whose goal is to discover what is possible and provide tons of green naked pumpkin seed along the way. Hulless pumpkin seeds have traditionally been used in Mexico for mole sauces and in Austria for pumpkin seed oil. We love the toasted seeds in salads or simply as a snack dusted with salt and seasoning. Seeds are easy to scoop out of the fruit, then when rinsed and dried will store for a year long stash of snackin’ goodness. Pepitas are high in protein, essential fatty acids, fiber, vitamins and minerals. The breeding work for this variety can be traced back to Ken Ettlinger’s (Long Island Seed Project) Little Green Seed and other Styrian type pumpkins. Chris received his original seed from Holly Dumont of California who had further selected Ken’s work.
