Tomato, Dancing With Smurfs (Organic)

Solanum lycopersicum. Indigo/Red Cherry. 65-70 days. Indet.

Delicious and very unique dark-purple topped, red cherry tomato. This newly available tomato color is referred to as indigo. Disease resistant plants have a purple blush and easily grow to 6′. After we trialed many of the new indigo tomatoes, we decided that Dancing With Smurfs is one of the best tasting. The purple/black color of these tomatoes comes from a natural cross made by Jim Myers (professor and plant breeder at Oregon State University). His original releases were then further developed by many independent tomato breeders. This particular variety was bred by Tom Wagner from Everett, Washington, the founder of Tater Mater Seed, and the famous breeder of Green Zebra tomato. First offered commercially in 2012 by New World Seeds and Tubers.

Geographical Origin

,

Sow indoors in flats with good potting soil as early as February, but no later than April. Keep warm and well-watered. Up pot seedlings into 4” pots once they have two true leaves. Transplant into the garden once danger of frost has passed.

Seed Saving

Collect seeds from ripe fruit by squeezing into a jar and add 25% more water. Wait a few days for mold to form. When seeds sink and gel-sac is gone, stir, add water, then decant and rinse to clean. Dry thoroughly. Tomatoes are mostly self-pollinating; isolation is not usually needed for seeds to be true to type.

Where did you grow this variety? Canada

It’s pretty to look at. Not my favourite flavour. Sweet enough. But mine turned out with tough skins.

Where did you grow this variety? Southeastern US

This is my first year growing these in Central Kentucky (zone 6a/6b) and they’re very similar to the Blueberry Tomatoes from Shaker Village I’ve grown the last 4 years. The only difference is the size. My Smurfs are definitely larger than a cherry! The taste is fine, and as previously stated, the skins are a bit tough, but still edible. I will grow these again, but my favorite tomatoes so far are Paul Robeson.
