Lettuce, Oscarde (Organic)
Lactuca sativa. Red Oak Leaf. 30 days baby; 55 full.
The red oakleaf lettuce that really got the organic salad mix game going! Oscarde Lettuce has the great combination of dark cherry-red outer leaves with ultra fine red-brown dappling on inner leaf areas, becoming green at the heart. This makes Oscarde look good even when sunlight is not as plentiful; as in the cloudy early spring, under row cover, or in greenhouse conditions. Oscarde is both richly colored and tastes great. Best as a salad leaf or cut-and-come-again lettuce because the regrowth after picking young leaves is excellent. Very good cold weather tolerance and leaf disease resistance. Not the best for mid-summer hot weather production. We decided to produce seed of this variety when it vanished from the organic seed market for a year or two. We could not let this happen so we are bringing back this important and foundational variety. Originating with French lettuce seed breeders, Oscarde has been an important variety for North American organic farmers for decades.

Sow indoors in flats with good potting soil year-round. Transplant into the garden 3-4 weeks after sprouting at 3″ spacing for leaf, 12″ for heads. Alternatively, direct sow March through September. In our area, lettuce can go through winter if protected. Succession sow for continual harvest.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds when flowers are downy like dandelions. Cut seed heads and place upside down in a bag to dry for a few days. Knock seed heads against side of bucket or tote, rub downy fluff off seeds. Winnow and screen to clean.
