Tomato, Darby Red & Yellow (Organic)
Solanum lycopersicum. Red with Yellow Stripes. 60 days. Indet.
Fairly early medium-sized, 2-4 oz, red fruit with yellow tiger stripes. One of the best striped tomatoes with excellent flavor, vigorous growth and high yields. Produces perfectly beautiful striped fruit for display on the tomato table at market and is a colorful addition to mixed quarts or flats. Developed in the 1960s by Dr. Lewis Darby of the Glasshouse Crops Research Institute in Littlehampton, England. Given to The Seed Ambassadors Project by Lila Towle, fellow Seed Ambassador and member of Frøsamlerne, the Danish seed saving group.

Sow indoors in flats with good potting soil as early as February, but no later than April. Keep warm and well-watered. Up pot seedlings into 4” pots once they have two true leaves. Transplant into the garden once danger of frost has passed.
Seed Saving
Collect seeds from ripe fruit by squeezing into a jar and add 25% more water. Wait a few days for mold to form. When seeds sink and gel-sac is gone, stir, add water, then decant and rinse to clean. Dry thoroughly. Tomatoes are mostly self-pollinating; isolation is not usually needed for seeds to be true to type.

Where did you grow this variety? Northeastern US
We’ve grown this for the past three years, and it’s become one of my absolute favorites. Big, straightforward red tomato flavor with the perfect kiss of acidity. Juicy, never mealy, great for salads. Very early, ripening just a week after Stupice for us. Extremely pretty, it gets an almost glowing, golden shimmer over its stripe-y skin. This has become an “always grow” for us.
