  • Bangkok garlic seed

    Bangkok Seed Garlic

    $13.00$22.00
    Hardneck Turban type

Bangkok is the only Turban type of garlic we have grown repeatedly. As a Turban, it is delightfully different from all other garlic types. Plants leaf out much more quickly after planting in the fall, and continue this accelerated growth all the way through the season, maturing almost a month earlier than the silverskin types. Leaves are much less fibrous than other types of garlic making it a good candidate for green garlic. Wrappers are white with some purple streaking, and cloves are plump with pink wrappers. Heat is only moderate. This variety was picked up many years ago at a market in Bangkok, Thailand.

Minimum bulb size for our seed garlic is 2 inches across. Average 5-8 bulbs per pound.

  • Donostia Red Garlic

    Donostia Red Seed Garlic

    $13.00$22.00
    Creole type

Donostia Red is from a market in the city of Donostia, also known as San Sebastián, located in the Basque autonomous community of Spain. Like all Creole garlic types it is from Basque Country and not Louisiana despite the name association. It has 8-12 crimson cloves on smallish bulbs with white wrappers. What the Creole garlic types lack in size they make up for in flavor (extra hot!) and they store exceptionally well. This type of garlic tends to grow larger in places with warmer winters and can be productive in cooler areas as well. Avram says, “This has been the most consistently productive Creole here and produces some 2 ½” bulbs.”

Minimum bulb size for our Creole seed garlic is 1 1/2 inches across. Average 8-10 bulbs per pound.

    Shvelisi Seed Garlic

    $13.00$22.00
    Hardneck Purple Stripe type

Aka, Chesnok Red. Shvelisi garlic is a very nice hardneck variety originally from the village of Shvelisi in the Republic of Georgia. With a strong rich flavor it is good for almost any purpose. Famous for its sweet flavor when roasted, it is also good raw (although some may find it a little too spicy). We highly recommend this variety for market farm production as well as for home gardening because it consistently produces large bulbs. Plants have a prostrate and sprawling growth habit, which might help it survive under heavy snows, but make this variety less suitable for green garlic bunches. The bulbs sometimes have a nice red color depending on growing conditions and the inner wrappers are a beautiful fuchsia.

Avram notes that it is “more commonly known by the ironic moniker ‘Chesnok Red.’ ‘Chesnok’ is the Russian (and related languages) word for garlic. If the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia is indicative of the less than harmonious relationship between the two countries, they have even less in common linguistically. In Georgian the word for garlic is ‘niori.'”

Minimum bulb size for our seed garlic is 2 inches across. Average 5-8 bulbs per pound.
